Defending champions are Djokovic and Rybakina and they would be the favorites to repeat. There will be challengers, of course, but they seem like pretty clear favorites to me.

Some people are upset about Carlos being seeded #1, but there really is no competive disadvantage to being #2.

Ruud at #4 is laughable. He's not even preparing for Wimbledon but the rankings are now the bible at Wimbledon, not like once upon a time. From #4 on, though, do any of those guys look like serious contenders based on their recent play? I don't think so.

Would love to see Tiafoe and Coco take it this year, would do wonders for US Tennis. It's just so hard to see anyone taking down Joker though barring some meltdown and on the woman's side I think this is Swiatek's to lose

I think Sabalenka for the women, Swiatek is improving on grass but she is nowhere as good on the faster surface

Nole gets a pretty sweet draw; Carlitos not so much.

Alcaraz #1

Chardy
Rinderknech
Jarry
De Minaur (Zverev, Berrrettini)
Rune (Tiafoe, ADF, Dimitrov)
Medvedev (Tsitsipas, Norrie, Paul, Korda, Raonic, Murray)
Djokovic

Djokovic #2

Cachin
Nakashima
Ruusuvuori
Musetti (Hurkacz)
Rublev (Kyrgios, Bublik, FAA)
Ruud (Sinner, Fritz, Shapo)
Alcaraz

Quarterfinal picks

Alcaraz/Tiafoe
Medvedev/Korda

Nole/Rublev
Ruud/Fritz (I hate picking Ruud to go this far but he has an incredibly soft draw)

Medvedev/Tiafoe
Nole/Fritz

Nole over Tiafoe

While I have Carlos losing in the quarters, after his win at Queen's it wouldn't surprise me greatly if he went to the finals. While I don't think he will get there, I do, conversely, think he is the only player in the field who might defeat Djokovic. The question is will he get the opportunity, and I am still betting no.

I look forward to seeing Kyrgios again. Hardly can we expect him to repeat the yesteryear's joyride, but it's good to have him back, especially on the surface that suits him.

I can't get excited at all about Wimbledon this year. We all know Djokovic is going to win it and unlike with Federer back in the day I have no interest in watching Djokovic outclass his opponents.

Felix may not be around long at Wimbledon, but he's not losing to this guy (he says with the confidence of an eight-year-old). Mmoh has a hellacious first serve but virtually nothing else,.

Cachin played Top Ten level tennis against Nole for six games, made an absolutely brilliant recovery from love-40 on Nole's serve in the seventh game, and then a combination of nerves, the occasion and inexperience on grass got him, 6-3 Nole. It was interesting to watch Djokovic's "intangibles" take over a set. Incidentally, according to a graphic, it's been 2182 days since his last loss at Wimbledon.

Swiatek 1 and 3 over Zhu. She's off to a good start.

Nole takes the match 3, 3 and 6. Excellent showing from Cachin; Nole played well, too. Exactly the kind of opening round match he needed.

This did not wear well. Mmoh beats Felix 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. FAA has a long way to go to get back to where he was.

Felix is shell of his former self.
Seriously, what happened to him?

Canadian tennis, mens and womens, looked so promising a few years ago and now they've all fallen off. Just illustrates what a mental grind the sport is and how hard it is to maintain a high level. Just makes you appreciate the greatness of The Big 3 even more.

Coco Gauff going out in three sets to Sofia Kenin was the biggest upset of the day. It wasn't so much Coco's forehand let her down today, though it got increasingly problematic in the third set, as it was the fact that Kenin controlled so much of the match.

Broken twice in the third set but not allowing her opponent Baindl to consolidate on either occasion, Fernandez grinds out a tense first round win..

Today: Rewatched the parts of the third set I didn't see, and, yeah, the forehand was really terrible, like get-a-new-coach terrible.

This is funny. Alcaraz's opponent Jeremy Chardy has announced that this will be his "last match" after which he will retire. Normally, he would have said "last tournament," right?
