That would really suck for Toronto.

In the end I think they would match it, but more so due to reasons such as publicity, and not losing the face of their franchise.

It’d probably be a smarter move to let him go over. Take the 4 1sts. Trade for a good 2C with some of those picks, and go shopping in free agency. Tavares is capable of winning the cup as 1C
