Between the venues and Olympic Village not being finished yet, the Zika virus, the superbugs and trash in the boating venues, the fears of police incompetence/striking...

We're 2 months away.

Will this even get started?

No disrespect to Rio, but the IOC needs to make sure it gives the Games to cities that are actually ready to host them. Not "might be ready in 8 years." Yes, I get the need to spread the Games around geographically, but there has to be some common sense involved, no?

Meh. Every Olympics (and World Cup) its the same. Endless stories in the media about how the venues aren't going to be ready in time etc etc

And guess what? They're always ready. There'll be a few days before the games start of pampered ******* journalists (is there any other kind?) posting whiny messages on twitter because their room doesn't have A/C or some other first world problem, then once the games start, no-one will care anymore because they'll all be watching the sport.

London is one of the great cities of the world. Britain is the 5th largest economy in the world, and we still had to put up with years of these stories before 2012. Doesn't matter where it's hosted.

Well, a few differences:

- the venues actually aren't ready, mainly because the construction companies involved are being investigated for kickbacks
- the Zika virus
- dirty water at the venues
- legitimate security concerns due to speculation about police competence/availability

Plus the fact that the entire Russian contingent in T&F have been banned and individual athletes are withdrawing due to concerns.

Western Countries don't get the criticism, but developing countries do.

-Sochi had concerns about venues being ready
-Zika can't really be blamed on the organizing committee
-Beijing had concerns over its air quality
-I don't remember security being as big a concern for Sochi or Beijing, but they had plenty of other concerns

And the Russian ban is in no way the fault of the organizers.

Whether or not developing countries should host the Olympics is question that should be answered. Sure they have many problems that are should get money over hosting the Olympics. But the eyes of the world also forces governments to at least try to address some of these problems. However one certain thing is that developing nations have the capacity to host an olympics without it being a "disaster"

There were plenty of security concerns over the London Olympics - there was a massive, MASSIVE story about how the private security firm that was hired for 2012 was unable to cope with the scale of the operation and at the last minute the government drafted the army in to do it all, from checking tickets to guarding the entrances.

Like I said, right up until the moment the Olympics started it was a huge scandal, the second the Olympics started, it was forgotten about. And when it was over, the story was "weren't the army brilliant"

So don't give me this guff about how it's developing countries that get picked on.
