Absolutely. Chiarelli is beyond dumb. They'll be picking top 10 after the regression though, so there will be some penance for his errors.
That Lucic deal is going to hurt.

Considering the cap will be around 80M for that year, dont see why filling out the bottom of the roster for 20M will be hard to do?

I can see that once they sign Draisaitl and Strome the Oilers payroll will be at least $62 mil, which doesn't leave a lot of $$$ left for the other 10 players.
I also think you are being foolish if you think the cap will jump to $80 mil in the 2018-2019 season
2014-2015 $69 mil cap
2015-2016 $71.4 mil cap ($2.4 mil increase)
2016-2017 $73 mil cap ($1.6 mil increase)
2017-2018 $75 mil cap ($2 mil increase)
2018-2019 $80 mil cap ??? ($5 mil increase ??? )

They'll be fine, RNH will be gone by then and Draisaitl is not signing a contract north of 8.5

Not without the Oilers eating some ($2 mil ??) of his contract. He's signed til 2021 and nobody's going to pay $6 mil per year for a player that got 43 pts in 81 games last year.
Teams that rebuilt coming out of the lockout were very lucky that there was a constnatly rising cap to keep them balanced with space.
With growth slowing down now teams like Toronto / Edmonton / Winnipeg / Buffalo(?) / Arizona may have to do some serious cap dancing in the future to remain compliant.

So Oilers have 4 top 4 Dmen, 1 starting goalie, #1C, #2C, #3C signed at ~60M
Kassian, Khaira, Puljujarvi also signed.
Oilers will have 15M to re up the RFAs.. not easy but certainly not cap hell.
At worst they will be forced to walk away from Maroon.

It'll depends on what kinds of seasons: Strome, Benning, Nurse, Caggiula, Slepyshev, Letestu and Maroon have and what their costs will be by then. That would be the last year of Puljujarvi's ELC too. Fayne's contract comes off the books as does Korpikoski's buyout.

I can see Sekera being moved out if Nurse or Benning become top 4 Dmen like they're expected to. They will need new contracts but they will be less than the 5.5 that Sekera is making.

Ok buddy that's why he's always put in trade proposals his 6 million per is gonna look like a steal compared to what future contracts are gonna look like.
