Its a hard question to answer, here is a scenario that might work but it involves a lot of moving parts:

Paul Stastny is willing to take a team friendly deal at $5 million for two seasons

Jets can't find a taker for Mason

Perrault, Armia and Chariot dealt (Chariot and Armia are likely to cost too much for depth)

In this scenario we need some cheap replacements for those positions:

Roslovic replaces Armia
Poolman replaces Chariot
Petan/Ves replace Perrault.

Given that we have taken a hit in forward depth Petan gets first crack as we can't afford to lose him to waivers in this situation. Ves can also use the seasoning on the farm to acclimatize himself to NA.

Here is how I have calculated the cap situation. Its tight but doable but there are almost too many moves that need to be made to facilitate this:

In this situation we would run the risk of a bonus overage but we might be able to mitigate against this be only carrying a 22 man roster when both the Jets and Moose are in WPG at the same time.

only problem with your numbers above is the 43K CAP space...You haven't included performance bonuses which with the players you have likely total around 3.8M meaning you'll need to shed about 3.7M in salary

If you polled every gm in hockey who they'd rather have, what do you think the out come would be?

If you polled every coach I'm sure the vast majority would say how important veteran 4th line grinders like Hendricks are, so I'm sure you'd agree with that too right?

All numbers include performance bonuses. Laine for instance does not make 3.5 million in base salary for instance.

Nope. All numbers include bonuses. Laine for instance is in at 3.5 million which is his base plus all eligible bonuses. Same for Connor 900k base plus 800k worth of bonuses.

They can absorb the bonuses, but they don't have any cushion for injuries.

He goes back to St Louis. In a couple of years he is centering a line between Erik Foley and the 2018 1st round pick that they acquired from the Jets.

Holding out hope that Stastny signs a 1 yr $6 mill deal, to give it one more go with this group basically intact minus Enstrom, Matthias and a couple more guys.

His chemistry with Ehlers and Laine can not be ignored. He is a tremendous mentor and teacher for those young players. A full season with him can lay a foundation that makes Ehlers and Laine strong players for the Jets for next decade.

A two year deal might be better, but who’s the cap casualty then? Little? Buff? Wheeler? Seems like a one step forward, two steps back situation.

I like a one year deal. But Stastny may not want to do that.

I want him to stay but I don’t know man, I think he’s gonna drop off pretty soon. I would prefer Chevy not risking another Little situation by overpaying a player who is declining and doing so long term. I’d rather them try using a developmental player like Roslovic, Appleton, Petan or future draft picks fit that role going forward if necessary.

But we are in contention phase right now, Chevy can't just hope for the best with prospects and see what happens. We need a proven 2C right now.

So why would he dump him after a disappointing year where his value is low? Also if he is such a dissapointment who takes him off our hands without sending back a bad contract. Little isn't going anywhere and if you listened to the interviews Maurice was raving about his leadership. I don't think the org shares a number of fans options on this subject.

Plus I just showed a way to keep Statsny while also keeping Little and Myers for next season.

But why would we want to keep Myers? He's overpaid for a third defender and the RD position commands a far too high cap hit already. He should be traded now when his value is high, he's not going to be resigned next season.

Edit: Gotcha, saw your follow-up post. Makes perfect sense.

I don't want to keep him but I suspect the org feels very differently about it. Unless they are just trying to pump him up the coaching and management continue to rave about his impact on the team both on and off the ice. It' to the point where I have a hard time seeing them move him.

I saw the post where you explained the parameters after I had posted. Sorry :)

Regarding them pumping Myers's tires unprovoked --- isn't that a way to try to increase the value? Maybe they ARE trying to move him ;)

If Myers contract fits going into the cap next year, keep him. The team is better with Myers than without.

If another 2C can be acquired either via trade or UFA, with Myers being dealt, that should be entertained. Can we fit Stastny/any other 2C beyond 2018-2019? When Wheeler, Connor and Laine are due and JoMo, Trouba and Helle's deals are fully kicking in

So you're saying your opinion is more valuable than an nhl coach? Or were you just making atotally irrelevant point?
Point missed......he's saying that polling NHL coaches isn't always your best source of information. Very relevant point.

With the inevitable injuries, Myers is often top four. Plus, if you want to win a Stanley Cup, having talent like Myers on the third pairing is pretty good. With Enstrom gone, and taking Hendricks, Dano and Mattias off the books, along with the 20-plus million we have available, we should be able to keep everybody together.

If Petan finally steps up, or a cheaper free agent, perhaps we can trade Perreault and get his 4.5 million off the books.

We're set at centre if Statsny signs here.

The problem is Dano, Hendricks and Matthias will need to be replaced with other press box guys commanding a similar wage, so there's nothing to gain there. It's not like we can just get rid of them and run with an understaffed roster.
