To beat the 50 goal record he needs 2 more as both Gretz and Bossy have 9.
However the 40 goal mark is another interesting milestone.
Gretzky: 12
Ovechkin, Lemieux, Dionne: 10
So Alex would need 3 more 40 goal seasons which seems a lot more plausible given his age (not that he can't get 2 more 50 seasons, just saying).
Indeed, he could well retire with 15, who knows.
The amount of 40 goal seasons by 35+ year olds is certainly higher, just recently:
Messier at 35
Selanne at 35, 36
Shanahan at 37
Hull also came close netting 39 at age 36.
However considering the legend of Ovechkin, it isn't out of the question to compare his potential numbers to Howe who hit 40+ at age 40 in 76 games while coming up 1 short in 74 games the season prior.
