Girardi may not have been the most talented player, but he was always willing to lay it on the line for the team.

We all know the deal here. Girardi is fine positionally and will do anything to help his team. The problems are he's a brutal skater and he can't handle a puck to save his life.
If Girardi would've been paid $2.5-3m as a third pairing defenseman in New York in a zone defense, no problems. The problem was, he had Vigneault as a coach, hell bent on playing a man to man defense in a league where no one else does it for a goddamn good reason, while sticking Girardi on the 1st pairing with a $5.5m NMC contract (christmas present from one of the most overrated GMs ever, Glen $ather).

So if Tampa fans want to brag about how fine Girardi has been on the third pairing with minimal responsibility in a zone defense, sure. Try sticking him on the first pairing in a defensive system that demands high mobility and great puck mobility and see how he looks.

Not so much a knack on Girardi, but the idiot behind the bench and the bozo GM that has finally retired. As long as the clown with a chewing gum is behind the bench, sure, Girardi had to be bought out (to stop the idiot from playing him on the top pairing if anything else). In a sane system with a fair contract, not so much.

I'm just surprised Vigneault hasn't resurrected Tanner Glass to play him 30 minutes a night.
