Nylander was coming off back to back 60 point seasons. Pasta was coming off back to back 27 point seasons (40 pt pace) before breaking out for 70. Bruins were taking a gamble that he could repeat that performance and Pasta was smart to take the guaranteed money.

It's not our fault that guys like Pasta and Mackinnon has production explosions after they sign their deals. Nylander's and Ehlers deals are still good value.

To be honest I don't really care how the deal is stuctured. AAV is all that matters in a cap world unless you're a small market budget team.

Moved this to a Dubas thread.

If a much better final elc year just "doesn't count", then why didn't Dubas pay Marner as a 65 point player? See? This lack of consistency is unacceptable.

And all these player friendly perks (front-loading/signing bonuses) are supposed to be used to LOWER the aav. They're not supposed to be just for free. And number of ufa years is MASSIVE when determining contract value.

I think we can all agree that the Marner deal sucked though and was nothing close to his comparables.

According to your argument, his comparables are 65 point players, right?

if that’s the case, he’s not merely “overpaid”, it’s the worst contract in the history of the nhl.

No, what I'm saying is that we shouldn't have paid him to produce like a 90 point player coming off his ELC. The comparable for him is Rantanen.

So with Pastrnak, he only had ONE great season (final elc year) pacing for 38 goals/77 points. As a result he's now (lol) comparable to a 20 goal/60 point player. Wow.

Ok, now let's play that precise game with Rantanen/Marner. Rantanen scored 85 points his 2nd year. He didn't have the Pastrnak level ONE great final elc year. But Marner DID. Only one great final elc year. Average 65 points otherwise.

Based on your (lol) "final elc year doesn't really matter" argument, shouldn't Rantanen make SIGNIFICANTLY more than Marner? Like, not even close?

The rules change when we apply them to leaf players. It's insane.

Btw... equating all 3 elc years is pretty silly. What you BECOME by the end of your elc is how contracts are determined.

Who do you think gets more money after 3 elc years?
Player a: 50 points/50 points/50 points.
Player b: 10 points/50 points/90 points.

CLEARLY player b would get more money even though they have the same elc total numbers.

Nylander using pastrnak ias a comparable was insane and Dubas was weakling to cave into him.
