I'm telling you, it's pretty scary. For a team that is supposed to be based on Defence, the scouting staff has been asleep at the switch since 2012. I omitted some names like Tanner Faith above.

I'm going Soucy. When in doubt, go with the big guy...I've got a LOT of doubts.

Belpedio - right handed shot, was pretty good at Ohio and seems to be on the cusp on breaking out.

The scouts started to buy in to their own hype, thought they could out smart everyone.

Are there legit arguments to be made for drafting a defenseman over Tuch in 2014, Eriksson Ek in 2015, Kunin in 2016 or Boldy in 2019? And I'm not talking about hindsight and a defenseman drafted later looking better than the guy we got, but a legit argument at the time for doing so. I don't think there is.

Trading 1st round picks in 2013 and 2017 never help these kinds of lists either.

The lack of 2nds hurts here as well.

My vote would've been Olofsson, but he just can't stay healthy.

When you sign Ryan Suter, draft 2 defensemen with top 11 picks, and have guys like Spurgeon and Scandella playing well and only entering their mid-20's, then drafting defensemen rightfully takes a back seat to other positions. And it's not like they completely ignored it taking one in the 2nd round in 2013, the 3rd round in 2014, and picking up one of the most sought after NCAA free agents.

I agreed. And you're right, Fletcher was trying to get a center, so he drafted JEE and Kunin, which took precedent over defense.

Should we have been focusing on drafting defensemen this whole time? Is that the implication of the thread?

There's no defenseman in 2014 I would rather have taken over Tuch, even with hindsight.

2015, yeah, I'd probably swap Erikkson Ek for Carlo now, but definitely not at the time.

What exactly is scary about a list of 5th and 6th round draft picks looking like a list of 5th and 6th round draft picks?

What hype? I can't think off the top of my head an impact player they drafted outside the top 60?
The media hype over the past several years about how good the team is at finding defensemen in general considering the success of Spurgeon, Dumba and Brodin.

Pretty amazing how few of those guys are even Wild property anymore. Can't complain about late round picks for the most part but Golden is one that rankles me: had zero offense his draft season, which 100% of the time equates zero chance of being an NHL player. Just a complete waste of a pick. And not the only time Flahr did something like that.

Could certainly be Warren, not giving up on Filip Johansson yet though.

I'm not trying to knock the kid. He's a prospect of interest for me, but they've started hot and have not a just former NHLer or two but also a possible future star or two.
