Why is it taking so long for Sheldon Keefe to be offered an NHL coaching job?

The guy's AHL record is fantastic, he's probably going to win the Calder Cup with a team of B type prospects other than a couple. So far this off-season the Stars and Rangers have hired new bench bosses from the NCAA.
Is the AHL becoming the lesser path to an NHL coaching job? Benoit Groulx also seems like a guy overdue for an NHL gig.

He really hasn't waited very long. He's coached the Marlies for 3 years and has no experience at the NHL level, even as an assistant coach. He has 2 and 1/2 seasons of CHL experience and 3 years of Marlies experience. Most AHL guys wait a lot longer than that. Keep in mind, the Marlies have been a very good AHL team prior to Keefe arriving.

Quinn actually has decent experience at the pro level.

Another thing with Keefe, is people have long-memories in this industry, and while he is erasing his past, he had a very bad reputation in Hockey circles due to his fairly public history. Its why it took awhile for him to get any sort of role in the OHL.

If DJ Smith gets the Islanders job I can see Keefe possibly replacing him as one of Babcock assistants.
DJ Smith works with the defenders, so Keefe's skill set may not be adequate for that position, and I'm sure it comes down to if Babs would want him on his staff.

What about the fact that he would have history with players like Travis Dermott, Andreas Johnsson and Frederik Gauthier just to name a few who have spent a lot of times with the Marlies and in the cases of Dermott and Johnsson should be on the Leafs full time come next season. Of course that's a hypothetical if there is an opening on the Leafs coaching staff.

I don't think he specializes in defensive coaching, and it all depends on what Babs would want. Babcock, I would assume has pretty much full autonomy on who he employs.

At the moment, DJ Smith oversees the defenders and PK, whereas Hiller is in charge of the PP and Forwards. While Andrew Brewer is mostly in-charge of video, analytics, and pre-scouting reports. So, depending on what Keefe's expertise are, it may be trying to fit a square peg inside a round hole.

The NHL continues to be run by dinosaurs, the majority of coaches waiting til their 50 years old to get an NHL job.

It’s the highest and most competitive level of hockey coaching in the world. There’s maybe 1-2 openings per year, with a pool of probably 100s of qualified people? Keefe has only been coaching for a handful of years. It shouldn’t be a surprise teams have stayed away.

A bit premature aren't we?

He's been an AHL coach for, now, 3 seasons and has won nothing. He may win this year but doesn't have a fat resume just yet.

He will be hired away. And it may be this summer.

Until this series is over though, he will not be offered a job anywhere else.

The last hyped up young hotshot Marlies coaching prospect with only 4 years AHL experience was Eakins and he turned out to be a colossal failure in the NHL so maybe teams are a bit hesitant

Maybe Eakins would have turned out better in a different organization. Who knows.

Marlies are full of AHL stars, what on earth are you on about?

Marlies have a fantastic roster. You must not know much about them. A lot of AHL stars on that team.
Kyle Dubas assembled the team and brought in Keefe.

My favorite part of this offseason is watching a ton of the usual people flipping from claiming the Leafs are nothing special, to now they are losing premier talent in the league. But when you confront them and ask if these guys are so good, the Leafs must be set up really well going forward then, they ignore the comment and live in some bizarro world where both the Leafs are losing the best talent AND they were not very good in their time here.

cant say I'm too surprised a Sabres fan who goes by "Austons Nostrils" has a poor grasp on the state of the Leafs organization

Oh please, other than Dermott and Liljegren there's not an A prospect on the Marlies. Oh add Grundstrom.

LOL Leafs fans think their AHL heroes are all coming up to be impact players on the Leafs.

nope, you are just demonstrating that you have no clue how good the Marlies roster is. Somehow you forgot to mention their best player by far. And also the best goalie in the league
