I always liked Ovechkin. He has a superstar quality that most superstars (Crosby, McDavid, etc.) lack. He's a showman, an entertainer, and a funny guy.

Ovechkin always has his critics, but he even gets disrespected in his biggest strength. Goal Scoring. Everybody will always talk down on OV for what i like to call the "flavor of the year". Fans will always talk down on OV for his rival goal scorer. It happened with guys like Rick Nash, Perry, Kane, Stamkos, Benn, Tavares, and recently Laine. I understand people having their favorites, but why do people always trash OV to hype up the "flavor of the year".

Maybe because deep inside they know that he's really the best. While the best players have their many fans, they also have their fair share of detractors. When "your guy" can't live up to the guy setting the standard, sometimes you end up with sour grapes.

He's taken for granted. When he retires people will realize we were watching one the the all time greatest hockey players.

Stamkos is a flavor of the year? He's got plenty of elite scoring seasons on the books. Easily the second best goal scorer of the past decade. If it weren't for injuries he would be even closer.

Comparing great goal scorers to the best goal scorer in the last 10+ years = disrespect?

I'm sure OV cries himself to sleep about it.

The only disrespect Ov gets is his playoff career which has been great, as if he's supposed to carry a team by himself to the cup when Backstrom has failed so much more, even relatively speaking.

And no Crosby without Malkin, Kessel or Fleury/Murray doesn't win the cup on his own either, Gretzky proved this in a league where the skill was far more skewed from top to bottom, one guy CANNOT do it, never mind in today's game.

Straw man argument like you read about.

Is someone wants to criticize Ovi you really think they are gonna talk about his goal scoring?

As much as I don't agree with it the playoffs is what people use to slander Ovi.

Never said OV gets disrespect about his career, just season wise.

OV is the gold-standard by which all goal-scorers this past decade are compared to. As a result every other Rocket Richard contender each year gets pumped up as "better than OV" by fans. Everyone knows OV is an all time great scorer that is precisely why this happens.

That has literally happened for years. Not so much lately, though.
IMO he was at least equal to Crosby for his first 5 or so seasons. Then Hunter (defensive turtle hockey) and Oates (basically PP specialist, Oates didn't want him to waste energy) came along and screwed him all up. He's been better under Trotz.

Nobody talks down about his goal scoring, and people are just using him as comparison when talking about other goal scorers.

Ovechkin gets talked down about his defense, leadership and the fact that he has no Cup, not about his goalscoring.

and every season there will be people challenging the best scorer in the NHL. That's how it works. It's still not disrespectful. Nobody claims these players are better than OV unless they actually beat him, which rarely happens. Insinuating that this is somehow disrespectful is ridiculous. It happens with Sid every single year about being the best player in hockey, and if there was a clear best goalie in the league, you would get "is X challenging Y for the best goalie in the league" every year.

That's professional sports.
