I'm honestly OK with this draft.

The only pick I would change is Dylan James at 40 for Noah Warren. Then I hope Dylan James is available at 105 (unlikely).
Oh yeah, I'm not saying I'd change every pick or something but those are the picks I made as it went along and I'm curious to see how it'll look in a few years.

I trust a lot of the picks the Wings have made this year.

And that's my honest answer.

8. Kasper
40. Warren
52. Buchelnikov
105. James
113. Johansson
129. Kilpinen

After that whatever.

This feels a little dishonest because we have the benefit of hindsight as far as where we can pick up guys. I have a handful of players ranked high enough on my board that I can game to take later than I would've.

008 LC Marco Kasper - third on my board after Slafkovský and Cooley
040 LC Matyáš Šapovaliv - big, smart center... would've swung this
052 LW Dmitri Buchelnikov - if Yzerman's staff prefers this guy to Trikozov, I do too
105 RD Anton Johansson - I'm assuming this is Håkan's guy
113 LC Amadeus Lombardi - I ignored the overagers, but this guy looks legit
129 RW Nikita Grebenkin - sorry, Håkan, the Black Book sold me on this guy
137 LD Vladimir Grudinin - too much great Russian talent at this point in the draft..
201 LC Owen Mehlenbacher - I don't know him, but I'll trust Detroit on this one
212 LC Brennan Ali - I don't know him, but I'll trust Detroit on this one

Island of Tortuga
#8 - Pavel Mintyukov, LD
#40 - Seamus Casey, RD
#52 - Gleb Trikozov, W
#105 - Vladimir Grudinin, LD
#113 - Tucker Robertson, C
#129 - Jake Furlong, LD
#137 - Servac Petrovsky, C
#201 - Tyson Dyck, C
#212 - Hugo Havelid, G

As is usual I took a bunch of Russians and at least 1 overager  I decided to go a bit off the board with Mintyukov because of how my prospect pool was shaping up. I have a ton of very good centers/forwards, but the D are lacking. If I was doing the draft for the current Red Wings I would have selected Matthew Savoie instead of Mintyukov.

Using picks from my other drafts this is how the pool would be shaping up. One thing that I have noticed is that because I always draft for the Wings and not my prospect pool we are over loaded with good center prospects. Using my other drafts, 2018-2021 here & 2017 here, this is how the pool would be shaping up:

William Eklund - Marco Rossi - Gleb Trikozov
Jonatan Berggren - Gabe Vilardi - Aatu Raty
Noel Gunler - Roni Hirvonen - Samuel Fagemo
Nikola Pasic - Dmitry Ovchinnikov - Pavel Dorofeyev
Alex Pashin - Tucker Robertson - Daniil Gushchin
Zion Nybeck -Servac Petrovsky - Patrik Puistola
Tyson Dyck - Eric Alarie

Pavel Mintyukov - Calen Addison
Jeremie Poirier - Anttoni Honka
Vladimir Grudinin - Seamus Casey
Anton Olsson - William Villeneuve
Anton Johannesson - Samuel Johannesson
Jake Furlong- Jacob Guevin
Kyle Masters-Ryan McCleary

Jesper Wallstedt
Devon Levi
Dustin Wolf
Amir Miftakhov
Hugo Havelid

Changes from last year:
Zegras, Ruzicka, Lindstrom, & Veleno have graduated
Slava Demin is no longer a prospect worth following
I think the prospect pool is loaded with high end forward prospects. Eklund, Rossi, Vilardi, Raty, & Trikozov all have top 6 upside or better. Then are a host of potential middle 6 forwards. The defence leaves a lot to be desired, but there is a lot of depth there. Mintyukov has #2-3 upside, Addison, Honka, and Casey have solid #3-4 upside, and Grudinin, Olsson, Casey, and Villeneuve are potential bottom 4 players. Lastly, we'd have by far the best goalie pool in the NHL to go along with 2 fanastic starters.

For fun this is what my Red Wings would like entering FA. Those in bold were drafted by me

Fabbri - Larkin - Bertuzzi
Vrana - Zegras - Zadina
Ruzicka
- Rossi - Suter
Sundqvist - Veleno - Stephens
Smith

UFA/Trade - Hronek
Walman - Addison
Oesterle - Lindstrom

Husso
Nedeljkovic

I think the forwards are comparable to the current Red Wings and this team has far better center depth than the current one. I think I'd be shopping some of the forward pieces to grab a defenceman or 2 as the current defence is awful. I think trading for someone like Marcus Pettersson, I believe he's otb, and offer sheeting Sandin would fix the defence.

40--Luneau

105-Salin
113-Furlong
129-Wagner
137-Vidicek
201-Lasilla
212-Gendron

From my rankings it's Yurov for sure, but assuming Yzerman has better info on the risks with that I'd go Kasper at 8 as my next highest guy

8. Kasper
40. Hutson
52. Luneau
105. Lindgren
113. Spicer
129. Donovan
137. James
201. Ali
212. Tourigny

For previous years I'd have to draft a bit off my list for the first round since we'd have gone Zadina Zegras Raymond Eklund Chibrikov, which is too forward heavy. The pool would look like this:
Zadina
Veleno
Addison
Wilde
Ranta
Hutsko
Prosvetov

Zegras
Lavoie
Puistola
Alnefelt
Honka
Newkirk

Raymond
Gunler
Poirier
Niemela
Cormier
Jurmo
Savoie
Chromiak

Edvinsson
Ceulemans
Chibrikov
Robertsson
Duke

The projection depth chart would be:

Bert Larkin Raymond
Fabbri Zegras Vrana
Ras Kasper Zadina
Savoie Veleno Chibrikov
Gunler

Edvinsson Hronek
Cormier Niemela
Hutson Ceulemans
Poirier Addison

Husso
Ned
Alnefelt
Prosvetov

Post the players you would have selected/ preferred the Wings to select with every pick.

I believe this has been a tradition for years on the board in the days immediately following the draft.

We can use this thread down the road to see how our own picks would have stacked up against the actual outcome.

Wings Draft Results;
8 - Kasper
40 - James
52 - Buchelnikov
105- Johansson
113 - Lombardi
129 - Kilpinen
137 - Mathurin
201 - Melenbacher
212 - Ali

Rules; you can keep the same exact result. Or replace any/all selections with prospects that were available at the time of that selection.

ie you can replace #113 Lombardi with any prospect chosen 114 or higher. Ect

There isn't a ton I would change outside of the 2nd round. I can't really say I hate any of our picks to be honest.

#8 - Geekie (but I am super happy to have Kasper as my 2nd choice)
#40 - Jani Nyman
#52 - Ryan Greene
#105 - Johansson
#113 - Lombardi
#129 - Kilpinen
#137 - Mathuran
#201 - Cade Littler
#212 - Jack Devine

Only thing I would change is to pick Del Bel Belluz at #40, they got the two way center with Kasper and I think it would have been wise to go with a more skill-oriented C next round

I am fine with who we drafted. Kasper was the guy I wanted, and he was in the top 5 overall for me. I don't know enough to even make an educated guess about the guys in round 2 to 7, but after looking up the guys we actually chose, I think we did good.

Burchelnikov, in particular, seems to have a high upside, although I don't think the chances of him reaching the NHL is that high. If he does, he will be a star.
