Here is whom I would have drafted were I in MB and the scouting staff's place, with a clear focus on "swinging for the fences" type picks.
#31. Francesco Pinelli (C) - He works on skating foremost + a bit of everything and he's a middle-6 guy. It's really that simple, and he's by far the safest pick of this hypothetical draft.
#63. Sasha Pastujov (LW) - Upside is pretty high, don't like some of of the coasting but talent is too high to pass up.
#64. Riley Kidney (C) - I love smart players, what can I say? Watched him late in the season as well as in the QMJHL playoffs and he was absolutely stunning. Executed plays in tight with incredible consistency, exploited defensive weaknesses like a veritable shark on ice, flashed magic mitts. He's just a good pick for us although I'm not the biggest fan of his pure athleticism as well as his skating/stride.
#87. Dmitri Kostenko (RD) - Lots of tools, and those stats in the VHL are bonkers. Overall he's a risky but potentially highly-rewarding pick.
#113. Ryan Ufko (RD) - He's just plain good in transition, makes generally smart decisions all over the ice, handles the puck well, dekes really well at top speed, and his shot is okay (he's no Mete, that's for sure). The guy also wins a surprising amount of puck battles given his size. However, his skating needs work and he also isn't the biggest, but he still has top-4 potential. Reminds me a bit of Spurgeon actually.
#142. Ty Gallagher (RD) - Looks like I'm much higher on him than NHL GMs apparently. And I now have enough RDs. All the RDs I took have less potential than Mailloux, but they also don't come with his lack of morals/intelligence/empathy/thoughtfulness/maturity.
#150. Martin Rysavy (LW) - You look at him play, you see that his tools are awesome, but I don't like some of the reads/skating the he exhibits, and the guy must learn how to make better use of his teammates/operate better in tight. That said, he's another high-upside pick and even if he doesn't reach his maximum ceiling he could still be a third/fourth line guy, kind of like someone like Tomas Nosek.
#191. Xavier Simoneau (C) - Let's face it, the dude has an astronamically high bust factor but is just an absolute paragon of work ethic, will, self-awareness and dedication. Chances are very low to nab a serviceable NHLer in the sixth round but Simoneau WILL play in the ECHL in the close future, and that's at least something. With a bit of luck and a lot of effort, the ECHL becomes the AHL in his case, and then, maybe, the NHL if he develops extremely well though the odds are stacked against the kid.
#214. Joe Vrbetic (G) - Would have taken the best goalie, left my goalie scout alone, free of outside influence, to work his magic. Vrbetic would have been the pick and I can understand why. He's like Jason Missiaen, except basically better at every aspect of the game. He's still a very longshot from ever playing in the NHL, but in the seventh round that kind of pick is close to the best you can hope for barring a Zetterberg-like fate-changing pick... Yeah, we could use one of those right about now.
