Who scored the only Canadian goal with 1:03 remaining to go into the famous OT of the 1998 Olympics?

I am sure no one recalls. (I just now suddenly rewatched it and thought wtf, i have no memory of that.)

I was watching the game live, and the goal scorer was one of my favorite players ever (top-2 in my heart that decade), but the moment was so big, the intensity so cranked, the OT so crazy, the aftermath so much... that the game-tying brain cells must've been recycled for other use.

Watching TV without the Internet to replay and resource, the streaming and not repeating unless grasped by media outlets or family and friends,... it was a different era.

Now, anyone can google it in ten seconds.

I never thought of doing it in the Internet age (should still be capital 'I'). The story was written, the videos posted, on that tourney - without that crucial stage-setting late 3rd period only goal by Canada.

I came across it while doing other research online. Was i in the bathroom at the time? Getting a drink from the fridge? The flurry of that game was as intense as grad night.

Yeah, I think it was Linden but it was deflected by a Czech player or else Hasek likely would have stopped it.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the posted video. That Slegr goal looked weak. Didn't seem like Roy was screened or anything.

More difficult question is who scored the only goal in the shootout to send their team forward

I remember it very clearly as my friends were over to watch the game in the wee hours and we made such a ruckus when Linden scored that my Dad came down in his bathrobe and informed us that "some of us have to work in the morning."

I think my Mom felt bad so she came down and watched the rest of the game with us.

Linden was always money in big games. I've watched the replay of that goal a few times and Lindros makes a great play cycling the net with the puck. I think the 3rd Canadian forward on the ice for that goal is current president of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I often cite Linden's 2 goals in Vancouver's 2-3 loss in Game 7 of the 1994 playoffs!

It was the peak of his career. He didn't get the help he deserved. He was wrongly traded away. I still can't stomach it.

me: linden should have been in the shootout
Me,... and many.... many others: Gretzky deserved the chance. He was the first skater out on the ice that day in Nagano when the game began, and due to circumstances beyond his great control, he was the last skater off the ice, after sitting head hanging, not picked, a part of a losing effort he wasn't a part of.

5 players to score and your 5th option isn't Wayne Gretzky? I was 29 years old at the time, and suddenly felt either i was too old already or coach Crawford was mistaken!

Gretzky, Lemieux,.. heck Yzerman on one leg,... you let them go!

Could you imagine a coach choosing five guys over Gordie Howe? Never ever.

Stick analytics up your wazoo! Some moments are meant to be and stopping them from happening is hubris.

Marc Crawford was not a fan of analytics - that decision was made from his gut and the ”eye test”.

Not sure why I had thought it started from a Rob Blake shot from the blueline... must have over time conflated it with a near goal around that time or in the OT.

If not for Crawford and Clarke, this moment would have been as classic a moment as Messier tying the shootout and the home VHS tape of the Zamuner family celebrating Gretzky’s game winner.

Obviously this happened before shootouts in the NHL and I know lots of people hate them in the regular season, but one of the upsides is being able to identify shootout specialists. TJ Oshie was specifically added to team usa in 2014 which led to his great effort against Russia.

I thought Primeau was a bit of a surprise too.

Some concern about foot speed on the big ice.
That made more sense later on given Clarke traded for Primeau and was soon captain. Lindros playing with Shanahan was a tease of what some Flyers fans felt what could’ve been. Have to think Zamuner was there because he was impressed with him in the 96 playoffs and the Clarke loved getting guys who played well against them.

I never thought Gretzky should've been there in the shootout. He was never the SO / breakaway specialist.

Robert Reichel scored for Czechia in the shootout, IIRC.

One of the best games I ever watched.

I think it was part of a misguided attempt to bring in specialists rather than follow the usual "lets take a star player and have them play a role player role for the tourney" method.

They done goofed.

That along with Lemieux, sitting, Kariya gooned by Suter, and Sakic being out too really downgraded Canada's chances. Leaving out Niedermayer was a strange move too since his skating would have been really helpful. Oh well.. single elimination is dumb because anything can happen and it did!

It was, they wanted to outsmart everyone by having guys who knew their roles, instead of just letting the best guys for the job do it.
