Brindy for me. Grew up a flyers fan before the Whale moved down and Brindy was one of my favorites in Philly so i always loved that trade. Obviously the rest there speaks for itself.

Honorable mentions for LaRose (played a random round of golf with him once and he was a genuinely nice guy), Vasicek (RIP), Kapanen, and Walker (that OT goal was one of the most awesome moments of Cane fandom second only to winning the Cup).

I don’t know if there are nuances to the numbers. All I know is there was a prevailing theory in recent years that pulling the goalie at 3 minutes was better than waiting.

There was a prevailing theory that having the best advanced metrics in the league would lead to success but here we are.

It matters what players you have. If you have to put out Ryan-Rask-McGinn-Williams as your 2nd wave of attackers are you really that much more likely to score?

It's hard to pick. I could list tons of favorites. Eric Staal is still probably my favorite overall. I really liked O'Neill as a player. He was such a good goal scorer for a few years, and he was huge in the finals run. Don't care much for him now of course. I loved Kapanen too. Irbe was of course the most fun goalie.

For more obscure or unusual players, I was always a big Tommy Westlund fan for no reason. I also liked Andrei Kovalenko for no great reason in his short stint too.

As opposed to keeping the goalie, not scoring, and still losing?

For me, the serious answer is Ray Whitney and Brindy as stars- Jeff Skinner too, at least in last year's incarnation. I'm willing to forgive this year if it was truly just teamwide disgust with Peters. Slavin on the defensive side. Erik Cole was always damn fun to watch, and he went to my alma mater, so gotta list him here.

In the non-stars category,
Gerbe (as a short guy myself, I'm always a fan of the little guys), Samsonov, Walker, and yes, LaRose. Glen Wesley as well, though I really should probably put him in the stars category. He was always a quiet guy on the ice who magically made pucks disappear from the sticks of the game's biggest stars. Have no idea where you'd find the stat now, but on one broadcast back in his last year or two, Tripp dug up a stat that showed Glen Wesley being the single most effective defensemen when playing against Crosby and Ovechkin in the entire National Hockey League. When he was just shy of 40 and they were both entering their prime. Quiet and unbelievably efficient, and almost certainly the reason we've been so good at finding guys like Pesce and Slavin late in the draft, and developing them well. Glen Wesley helped us draft Glen Wesley clones.

And then there's Cam Ward. Yeah, he's had a lot of ups and downs. When he's on, he's the best, most showstopping goalie in the league, and it's really fun to watch. And it won us a cup. And whether he's up or down, he's still a model person, and carries himself with humor and humility. No matter how bad he gets when he's playing badly, I can't help but root for the guy.

I never really got to watch much of teams before the 2006 regular season, though I did see a few games before that before I really followed any of it (including one back in 97), so no slight is intended to the players from that era.

So that's my favorite... uh, 11 Canes. 1, 11, basically the same thing, right?

Wasn’t Borer the one who had some incredibly ****ty luck with injuries, then when he was finally getting healthy, happened to be the guy who took the worst of the River Rats bus crash?
Yep. Guy had a few games worth of showing in Raleigh and looked pretty decent, and I think literally the game after he's sent back down he gets a nasty knee injury. Starts getting back on track and bam, Albany Bus Crash. Guy just had some of the most shit luck I've ever seen.

Surprised no one mentioned sami kapanen. Always loved watching him.

This might be one of the most Canes videos ever. We finally got into a fight, and its Kapanen vs Samsonov... And just for good measure, John Grahame comes in complete the Canesfecta.

Speaking of which, Samsonov and his back breaking goals in the 2009 are up there, too. He single handedly beasted Boston that series.

Always loved Samsonov. I feel like he was always super close to being so good with us. Insane stick handler, clutch goals, didn't play like a total bitch given his size. Carved out a solid career and was always quiet.
