Yes. Edler does more things. He gets more ice time and deserves it.
But would you trade Tanev or Edler, if you had the chance to grab some amazing asset in return? Seems to me that an argument would be made for Tanev, a player who still seems to be improving and is a calming presence already, and a right-hander, vs. a 30 year old with a surgically repaired back.

Asset value and their on-ice value are completely different things, though. Age and health history become factors.

Edler for sure, plays all situations and logs the most minutes.
Tanev's a close second, if he was a little more gifted offensively he might be.

Basically only votes for Edler/Tanev (and some "joke" votes for Sbisa).
So yeah, we have a top 2 pairing (Edler/Tanev) and then nothing after that.

I'd consider Reinhart - even broken down as he was by the time he was a Canuck a #1.
Ohlund, even in his prime was more a #2 - one of the best shutdown guys in the league at that stage in his career though.

I'm talking guys who score, play excellent defence and play huge minutes. We don't have anyone who does all of that.
I think you (and a lot of people) hold #1 d-men to way too high of a standard.
He's part of one of the better defensive pairings in the league, he is on pace for 38 points despite being pointless in the last 8 games while the team has struggled offensively (leading our d-men by quite a bit), and he averages over 24 minutes per game. He isn't perfect, and he isn't a franchise d-man, but I still think he qualifies as a lower end #1 d-man.

Edler, when he wants to be
Edler AINEC...plays high minutes, all situations, and is one of the most experienced out of our defense core.
Not sure why everyone wants to trade him either, we'd be decimated in the backend. Tanev has struggled this season imo and dealing with injury issues and Hamhuis took a shot in the face.

He's cut those down drastically in the last few years.
Still makes them on occasion, like all players, but it's bound to get noticed more when you're on the ice as much as he is in a game.
