Eh lock this. Whenever Crosby or Mcdavid are mentioned in an OP it usually goes downhill quick.

Edmonton.

The problem with Edmonton is that they have nothing going for them. It's sad, but unfortunately true. Even with someone as good as McDavid - they have so many issues to fix to contend. No short term fix in sight. But - you don't really want to pass up on a player like McDavid and trade him away to do yet another rebuild do you? So they're stuck in limbo lately, trying to retool/adjust, but no success yet.

With this option - Edmonton become cup favorites and have a limited 2-3 years windows to "win now". After - they rebuild. Win/win for them.

McDavid is fantastic - but Crosby alone almost matches him. So in terms of on-ice impact, you add Malkin, and keep Drai...that team would be ridiculously good for the next 2-3 years imo. Strong cup contenders.

As for Pitt...they don't do it. For a few reasons. One reason is loyalty - their fans wouldn't be happy and trading Crosby/Malkin away would be weird. Second - McDavid simply isn't anywhere as good as the duo, so it sets the team back. Crosby/Malkin could still bring another cup - you don't give up one that for just one player

Also - I like this thread. I hope mods don't get trigger happy and lock it too soon...

If you dont consider loyalty Pens would jump on it. I'm guessing Oilers may as well

Oh, both Arizona and Montreal have learned not to put Chucky as a C.

So we are going to ignore the 10 year age difference in players and the extra $6 million in cap space created for Pittsburgh.

It would be McDavid + whatever option Pitts puts the additional cap towards moving forward.

Hilarious that posters believe Pittsburgh would/should/could say no.

As for Edmonton we’d need to dump cap just to fit both contracts. Who do we have to trade to create another $6 million in cap? RNH for futures or something? Get real

The thought that Edmonton could go Crosby, Malkin, Drai, Nuge down the middle would make them terrifying offensively, but feels to me like there'd still be some pretty big holes on the team. Ignoring the cap, if they thought this would win the cup this year or next, they'd be silly to not take it.

But Crosby and Malkin are at or near that line where age will start slowing them down. I mean, 38 year-old Crosby is probably still a damn good player, but he won't be in the running for the Rocket. Long term, the deal probably swings to Pittsburgh's favour.

The very premise of the trade (win now vs build around McDavid) isn't being ignored, it's clearly the focus of the proposal.
