All players are eligible. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 Dmen, 12 forwards, and a coach. This is a point system draft. The point cost of the players are listed below and are the player's rank. Gretzky costs 1 point, Jacques Lemaire costs 190 points, and all unlisted players cost 200 points. What prevents you from drafting the top 20 players of all time? You must spend at least 3,000 points on 20 players. You can spend more than 3,000 points. The coach is free. Please list your draft picks' point costs so I can check out your strategy.

Love your team, but you’re about 1000 points off the OP’s benchmark.

Well, the 3000 points are really hard to make. If I want Gretzky on it, the rest of the team must average at least a 157,8 rank. If I want Abel (#100), the rest must average a 152,6 rank. Might as well say “create a roster out of the 101-200 best players according to HoH” for this experiment.

Edit: I feel that 2500 or 2000 points would be plenty challenging and less of a struggle, however I sympathize with it if the point was to force us to educate ourselves on the 150-200th ranked players.

And this is what I managed for 2500 points (2521 to be exact, if my maths worked out right). Flipped Makarov for Bure but couldn’t be arsed to continue for 3000:

Krutov 127 - Larionov 180 - Bure 129
Kucherov 187 - McDavid 130 - Hossa 157
Perreault 132 - D. Savard 176 - Jagr 16
Lindsay 38 - Forsberg 51 - Howe 2

Fetisov 25 - Kasatonov 168
Hedman 146 - Karlsson 109
Pospisil 188 - Bouchard 189

Price 185
Smith 186

A great unit, an awesome youthful line with a defensive conscience, a fun line, and a hard working mean line. Then a great defensive tandem and a cheap one, plus the cheapest goalies but I bet they’ll get the job done.

Given they're force multipliers:

Gretzky 1
Orr 3
Hasek 13

and Gordie Howe does everything 2

So,... to get to 3000... that's 200×14 players + 181 for 2 players

21 Messier
163 Zetterberg

The 200 club: Cournoyer, Balderis, Fleury, Olmstead, Peca, Fleury, Giacomin, Murphy, Pulford, Reardon, Johnson, Giacomin, Coulter, Sittler

Team VanIslander

coach Anatoli Tarasov

Henrik Zetterberg - Wayne Gretzky (C) - Yvan Cournoyer
Ted Lindsay - Mark Messier (A) - Gordie Howe
Bert Olmstead - Darryl Sittler - Helmuts Balderis
Esa Tikkanen - Michael Peca - Theo Fleury

Harvey Pulford - Bobby Orr (A)
Tom Johnson - Ken Reardon
Art Coulter - Larry Murphy

Dominik Hasek
Eddie Giacomin
A 3003-point team.

That would be 3011, McDavid at the same price than option like Guy Lapointe is really a good price.

I thought the same thing and made a team captained by Abel, then my friend made a team led by Orr and Mario that was similar to the teams made by VI and Mad Luke, and I was humbled.

This is really just about finding "value picks" - players who you personally feel are underrated compared to what this board's panel thinks - or, finding sweet spots in the list where the players clustered in a certain range seem to make more sense than others that cost 10% more or 10% fewer points than they do.

i probably cheaped out a little more than i was comfortable with on dmen, especially speed on the bottom two pairs, but i feel like langway/murphy might be more than the sum of their parts. they only played together one season, murphy's first year in washington, but that was langway's peak norris/hart runner-up year.

i think the other strategy is filling your low-ranked or unranked player spots with guys who are elite complementary players, not A- superstars. so, in my case, elias, lemaire, tikkanen, larry murphy vs, say, denis savard or mats sundin

that forces me to rely a little more on gretzky/mcdavid/trottier to pull the cart on their lines, but it also means that i'm not asking those guys to do heavy defensive lifting too.

Bure as a penalty killer?

When was the last time he checked anybody?

he retired like 20 years ago, so more than 20 years ago?

seriously though, he was amazing on the PK as a guy who scared the bejesus out of point men. he would come at you and even if you were gary suter or al macinnis, you'd take an extra second before you moved the puck.

There are three creative offensive players I loved whom I lost respect for after going to their games and actually watching their shifts: Coffey, Ronning, Bure. *sigh* Circling vultures near center ice instead of backchecking, being opportunistic rather than responsible... used to be a thing.

The last player I saw do it live was Jason Spezza. Ugh.

  • These 200 point players may seem humble in an all-time context, but what 2021 NHL team could beat them in the playoffs? None.
  • Alexander Yakushev - Vyacheslav Starshinov - Daniel Alfredsson
  • Brendan Shanahan - Pierre Turgeon - Yvan Cournoyer
  • John LeClair - Rod Brind’Amour - Alexander Mogilny
Keith Tkachuk - Jeremy Roenick - Claude Lemieux
Lester Patrick - Sergei Gonchar
Brad McCrimmon - D Hatcher
Pulford - Howell

ChiTownPhilly...

What do you have against HHOFer Larry Murphy?

Bowman himself said he was one of the most important players in cup victories.

Also, I have him on the 3rd pairing but another ATDer posting before me has him on the 1st pairing. ... But you single me out?

He needs to get a life. You put in the hard work and he takes a cheap shot not realizing that it's a fantasy team and sometimes players play on the wrong side. I still remember him bragging about being an expert on baseball history and not realizing that dead ball pitchers would be less effective in a live ball era.
