I realize quality and sales are unrelated, but I think sales are slightly interesting culturally. The bestselling 70s songs:

1 HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE by Bee Gees
2 I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR EVERYTHING by Andy Gibb
3 YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE by Debby Boone
4 LE FREAK by Chic
5 STAYIN’ ALIVE by Bee Gees
6 Y.M.C.A. by Village People
7 SHADOW DANCING by Andy Gibb
8 HOT STUFF by Donna Summer
9 NIGHT FEVER by Bee Gees
10 RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN’ ON MY HEAD by B.J. Thomas / The version sung by Dionne Warwick is much better. Her album "I'll never fall in love again" cover is posted above.

Not my favourite decade, but one I need to dive deeper into. I can't think a tenth artist that I am a true fan of off the top of my head.

Brian Eno
CAN
Sun Ra
Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock
Parliament-Funkadelic
Pink Floyd
Lee "Scratch" Perry / The Upsetters
The Beach Boys (yes I like some of their 70's albums)

i'll choose 90% of any of the above 70's list over any top 10 list from each decade from 1990-2023.
Luckily for you, my post comes below yours.

Easy top three:
Serge Gainsbourg
Alice Cooper
Frank Zappa / The Mothers of Invention

And then - in no order:
Captain Beefheart
The Art Ensemble of Chicago
Henry Cow
Sun Ra
Plume Latraverse
The Residents

And other stuff that would come up a few times in my favorite of the decade:
Shawn Phillips
Tom Waits
Faust
Funkadelic
Klaatu
Jacques Brel
Brigitte Fontaine
The Kinks (should be in the top 10 I think)
Miles Davis
George Harrison

Miles Davis
After a long time, I recently listened to Bitches Brew (recorded in '69, but came out in '70); every song has devastating parts, but as a whole, I think it's a somewhat tough listen. A flawed masterpiece might be a kind way to put it. "Spanish Key" and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" are the best songs IMO.

Overall, I'm not so high on jazz fusion, but I do like also In a Silent Way and Jack Johnson. Still, his collaboration with Gil Evans is my favourite Miles, especially Sketches of Spain.

What do people think of Weather Report? I listened to Heavy Weather once and sort of liked it, but it didn't blow me away. Maybe I should give it another listen; Joe Zawinul was a talented composer.

I think Wings are underrated. They had at least a dozen songs that are good. I can't list my top 10 songs, there are too many to choose from, but here are ten I like.

1. What's going on - Gaye
2. Heroes - Bowie
3. Redemption song - Marley
4. Father and son - Cat
5. Wish you were here - Floyd.
6. Free bird - LS
7. London calling - Clash - Released in the UK in December 1979
8. Marquee moon - TV
9. Stairway to heaven - LZ
10. Man in black - Cash

jazz...

i saw bernie williams from the ny yankees play electro jazz at a bbq festival in nyc several years back. the guy can flat out play.

jackie the jokeman: jazz is music by potheads playing scales.

years back before becoming famous from joining ozzy osbourne's band jake e lee was in one of those jazz fusion bands. while on stage there was a part where he just played something that just made no musical sense at all. once the jam was over one of the band members goes up to him and goes, "dude, that was amazing!!!" after that gig jake quit the band and stopped playing fusion.

Sketches of Spain is 60s, but yeah, I really like that one too.

In the following order:

KISS
Cheap Trick
Van Halen (only released two albums that decade but both great. Especially the debut).
Judas Priest (although I overall prefer their 80s run from British Steel to Turbo more).
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Journey
Blue Oyster Cult
Aerosmith

Can't make a decision on the 10th choice (The Cars, Blondie, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Talking Heads, Styx, CCR all jostling for that final place).

I like most of your list. Cheap Trick is underrated and early Van Halen is simply great.

I know, but I was talking about Miles Davis (and his work with Gil Evans) also generally; most of their collaboration was 1948—63, but I believe Evans wrote or at least co-wrote/arranged some of the later stuff too (like "Mademoiselle Mabry" which is based on Hendrix's "Wind Cries Mary").

Evans' own Out of the Cool (1961) is a pretty good album also.
