Matthews will prove to be generational. After this season.
Im guessing if McDavid was a leaf, you would be putting him up on Gretzky's tier.

Matthews is a franchise player, thats it.

Good player to have, about 3 tiers below McDavid, I look forward to McDavid having more assists than Matthews has points again.

LOL at anyone calling Matthews a generational player. Get real.

But...but...trotz said he was. Yeah, hockey people say stupid things from time to time as well.

Matthews will never be a generational player. He’s in that very good player tier, with Laine and Eichel. It’s a good tier.

And people say that Matthews is somehow underrated.

RCS also claimed Matthews was superior to McDavid and would win the Art Ross and Hart....last season.

Pretty telling.

Wouldn’t a truly generational player prove himself to be such immediately?
He scored 40 goals in his rookie season winning the Calder.

His second season - he was hurt all season and still over a PPG.

This upcoming season, he is healthy with a little more experience. Sky is the limit.

40 goals in today’s NHL is quite impressive indeed. Not a bad sophomore season, either.

The Maple Leafs are lucky to have him.

.....and McD will probably still be double digit percentages short of the peer domination of the generational ones. Nice player to have though.

Hasek and Brodeur should be considered. I still can't imagine what either could have been if playing with run-n-gun offenses. Mario, Gretz, Orr, Sid for sure. You can argue Ovechkin, but Crosby was clearly better. Generational isn't about stat totals. McJesus prolly will be, but that's yet to be seen. Matthews and Eichel will be in his shadow w/o a doubt. Can't wait to see what Dahlin offers.

Crosby--Ovechkin--Malkin

Hart: 2--3--1
Finalist: 6--5--3
Top 10: 8--8--4
Lindsay: 3--3--1
Smythe: 2--1--1
Calder: 0--1--1
Ross: 2--1--2
Top 10 pts: 10--8--4
PPG leader: 5--3--1
Top 10 PPG: 11--8--9
Rocket: 2--7--0
Top 10 goals: 4--11--3
GPG leader: 2--8--0
Top 10 GPG: 4--11--5
AST (1st+2nd): 7--10--3

Awards: 11--16--6

Fun fact: Crosby and Ovechkin each have more hart nominations (6+5) than Malkin has top 20 finishes (4).

Always a good laugh when people try to throw Malkin in with Crosby and Ovechkin. He had an amazing peak but he's nowhere close career wise.

Im arguing peak here. And level of play while playing.

Malkin has played 4 full seasons. He's not getting generational status with 4 seasons. Especially considering he only won 1 hart in those years. There have been dozens of players like him.

The bolded ones are voted by the same group of people that voted Matthews as better center for AST after 2016-17 season despite having 3 less points in 20 more games. Or Stamkos (72 pts in 82 gp) and Johnson (72 pts in 77 gp) as better than Malkin (70 pts in 69 gp) in 2014-15. Or voted that Malkin is not in Top 100. I wouldn't trust their judgement.

Sorry to be a generational player you need to win the Art Ross more then 2 times if you are a forward. Crosby twice, Ovy 1 time. Jagr is definately generational if you are over the age of 18..
McDavid has good shot to become that as he has two Art Ross's at 21 years old. Crosby will never win another and either will Ovy.
Where are these rules codified?

To me there is a torch passing from one generational player to the next.

So
Richard
Howe
Hull
Orr
Lafleur
Gretzky
Lemieux
Jagr
Crosby
Mcdavid

Generational player is the face of the league. Rarely will there be a generational player who had multiple down years in their prime

On my list Lafleur is iffy and if Orr wasn’t injured he probably would have passed the torch to Gretzky.
