We keep talking about sacking Mact and Lowe and other guys..

Who would we get to replace them?

We want someone with a proven track record of building a team and knows how to trade.

For me Neil Smith is one name out there I think could step in and fix the problems with this team. He is not afraid to trade and he knows how to draft outside of the first round.

He is still a little bitter over the NYI thing--but I think he would help the oilers
If not Smith who should be GM

Criteria

1)Proven track record in the NHL as a GM or hockey Ops in the NHL
2)Not part of the old boys clubs
3) Has a relationship with other nhl teams when it comes trading and business
4) Proven draft record outside of the first round
5) Proven record for setting up development of players
6) Knows how to hire a coach

The 'five year' comment made by Dallas during his exit interview has me a bit nervous.

Assuming we DO see a GM change, for the sake for discussion.

http://www.capgeek.com/oilers

Here is what our new incoming has to work with:

Nikitin, Purcell at 4.5M (Buyout candidates).

Pouliot at 4M.

RFA: Schultz, Arco, Pitty, Nail.

UFA: Fasth, Pinny, Petey.

Officially, our skeleton is... valid contracts only:

Hall - Nuge - Eberle
Perron - Draisaitl - Purcell
XXX - XXX - XXX
Hendricks - Gordon - XXX

Fayne - Ference
Klefbom - (Marincin/Hunt/Davidson)
XXX - XXX

XXX
Scrivens

You have 17.5M in cap-space.

Is Neil Smith the *******? What will he do?

There are your UFAs.

Will you trade your core?

I don't think a GM move would happen this year or even in the offseason at all.

BUT for the sake of convsation ..., what are the best available current options?

I can think of these 6 ....

Darcy Regier
Ray Shero
Jim Rutherford
Mike Gillis
Paul Fenton
Rick Dudley

Neil Smith is an out of date option imo. Past Due.

These guys are buying time till the New arena is running. Its painfully obvious. Don't be surprised to see MacT here for the long haul. Katz has a hard time firing his ex Oiler buddies.

Neil Smith's greatest "skill" as a general manager was his ability to throw money at players. He succeeded with the New York Rangers by essentially buying the services of many former Edmonton Oilers players. He did exactly what Glen Sather later did in the 2000s.

Smith wouldn't be an appropriate general manager for any team in the current NHL. There are better options.

I'd rather see the Oilers get someone like Ray Shero

The work he did to turn that franchise around and win a Stanley cup would be immensely valuable here. Sure, Pittsburgh hasn't been great over the last few years, but never ending injuries and poor playoff showings with their cap crippling franchise players comes with it's own set of problems, problems that tend to be very difficult to overcome.

Regardless of who takes over in Edmonton though, they've got a huge mess to clean up after Mact's last two offseasons.

i think you look for the best asst. GM's who are deserving of a promotion, the same for POHO and scouting. Take the best VP of hockey ops and the best senior scouts/scouting managers and offer them promotions.

It could be viable to look for someone who has had past success as a GM but i feel it far more productive to find someone who is assisting in the construction of a successful team in the present.

My candidates for GM are:

Paul Fenton - 17 years with Nashville, 9 as assistant GM.

Julien Brisebois - 5 years as Tampa Bay assistant GM, 8 years of AHL GM experience.

Norm Maciver - 8 years with Chicago, 3 as assistant GM.

Regier would be good for you guys. He's basically been through every situation in the modern NHL you can imagine, be it low budget teams, deep-pocket ownership, 3 conference championship appearances, a Cup appearance, teams on the cusp, etc.

He has a pretty good drafting and development record. Development is one of his strong suits I'd say, given the need for in over the years in Buffalo. I'd say his one weakness is FA signings, but he may have a new outlook on that now that he's been away from the Sabres a few years.

You could do a lot worse but I'm not sure you could do a lot better.

Former Oiler played with mact and won a cup here--he falls under the old boys club

Jim Rutherford got hired by Pittsburgh in June, so he's probably not available.

Shero would be my first choice. Had he fired Bylsma a season or two ago, I think he would still be with the Pens. After Shero, I would say it's Fenton and Regeir.

Paul Fenton is the only one of the names mentioned I have any confidence in being a competent GM here.

My top choice would be Jason Botterill. Cap specialist in Pittsburgh, not from Edmonton but born in the city. It would be hilarious if we poached him from the Pens, he's currently the succession plan for Rutherford.

A BIG no to Ray Shero. How can you have the top two Cs in the world and only win one cup? He traded two 2nd round picks for Doug Murray. I'll pass on him, even with the nice trades he made early on for that team. However, I guess you can also point out that Botterill was part of that decision.

I'd be also really happy with Rick Dudley, and I think I trust Paul Fenton for sure.

Shero or Regier jump out for me, but regardless of whomever they try and court I think it is essential that lowe is out of the picture. There is just too much drama from fans and media with Lowe around.

Lowe needs to go in order to get anyone respected in the hockey world to consider the job (unless they're currently out of a job). The black cloud hanging over this franchise begins and ends with Lowe.

Ryan Martin from Detroit. Although I doubt Holland is going to let anyone talk to his employees after being pillaged for years.

Also Brisebois in Tampa + Fenton in Nashville.

Be like the NFL and poach the assistants. Bruce Arians etc

The problem with everyone's logic here is that to poach assistants one would have to assume that the Oilers would have to engage in an interview process. Something the Oilers rarely... and I mean rarely do.

Last time we did that we got Eakins. The MacT clone.

could be worse, you could spend millions on an independent hiring firm like michigan and end up with a former michigan player and offer 8 million dollars to jim harbaugh instead

I agree with this logic, although I'd be hesitant to hire a 'cap guy' like Botterill.

As others have posted, the only veteran GM that is out of contract is Regier at the moment.

I like Fenton because he has the experience, has worked under David Poile (and with excellent systems-based coaches like Trotz and Laviolette - who should have been hired 20 games into last season), and has worked with an organization with a solid drafting/player acquisition record.
