When was the last time you locked your keys in the car?

And how did it work out for you?

I think I've only done it once like 20 years ago in my Beretta GT. Thank god the doors were so big it was easy to pry with one of those plastic trim tools. Then the ever so trusty coat hanger.

I've had my truck 6 years now and still havnt made a spare key. Thats living life on the edge lol.

Last time was nearly 25 years ago. I realized i did it the moment i shut the door. It worked out just fine, as i was in the habit at that time of keeping a spare in my wallet. I just grabbed it out and unlocked the car, grabbed my keys.

With the Audi, it's no concern at all. The keys never leve my pocket... proximity entry and startup.

The Shelby, nice audible alert when the door is open and they key is in the ignition, so no risk there either. Have never carried a spare with for these cars.

Haven't in years but very possible with my GTI. If I open the hatch but not a door and then close the hatch the doors lock gotta be careful not put key down there when loading it up.

I did it about a year ago in my Chevelle. I was replacing speakers and adding a BT receiver in the glove box. While i was on my back inside the trunk the keys fell out of my pocket. I climbed out and closed the trunk. As i was slamming the trunk lid i saw the keys too. Had to remove the back seat and both trim panels/arm rests in the back seat. I made two spare sets the next day

Before that was about ten years ago. I had just bought a Honda Odyssey and was getting used to the key fob. At the time i was getting up about 5 to prepare my newborn daughters bag for day care, working a desk job from 8-4, then working concessions at TD Garden so i didn’t get back home until midnight. I was a mess those days. I’m still not sure how i managed to lock the keys inside, because most care have a lockout safety built in i think. I remember trying to recreate it and the doors would unlock and horn would beep.

I stopped at a convenience store on my way to a friends house with another friend and the conversation went like this...
Me: "do you want anything inside or are you just staying in the car?"
Friend: "I'll just stay in the car"
Me: (leaves the car running and gets out of the car to walk inside the store)
Friend: "Actually ill go inside" (opens the door hits the power lock and closes the door)

Did it twice back when I had my 1979 Corolla. The car was still running each time during stops at stores, and the engine idled so quietly that I had to put my ear down on the hood to confirm my stupidity. Which I was reminded of again (both times) when my wife had to bring the extra key to me (both times). :banghead::banghead:

Never have. .

Back in the day with with older cars, and old school keys, -- I used to use electrical tape a key on the rear suspension for an emergency. Its a real bitch to get off, but its huge if you really need it. Happy to report I never needed to.

Buddy (who was around a month short of his 21st bday) and I were pregaming in the parking lot for a 311 concert I think 13 years ago. Had the key on to listen to music from a pink Geo Prizm but with only the drivers door open with the window down a crack and all other windows up.

Was a weird late Spring day in MI where it goes from cloudy-rain-sun and back multiple times during the day. A random strong gust of wind blew our unopened Coors tall boys from the hood to the ground (causing them to break and us to shotgun them quickly - to onlookers delight...) and closed the open drivers door.

We were able to flag down a patrolling police car, who didn't have a slimjim, but had some items that allowed them to roll down the manual window more so we could reach in and unlock the door. Luckily, the cop didn't inquire about my friends age...

With 100% manual locks, it was super easy to accidentally lock the drivers door with your elbow and not realize it in that car. We got pretty good at using a cheap door stopper as a wedge allowing us to feed in a wire coat hanger attached to one of the flexible grabby tools.

We later found one of these in the glove box, which might have helped:

I was moving in August and had a bunch of stuff in bags. Loaded up my trunk. And my trunk wouldn't close. Kept popping open. I only had to go a couple minutes away so I drove anyways...got home and googled the issue. My car won't close the trunk if it senses keys in there. My spare keys were in one of the bags in my trunk.

I have done it twice in my life with both times being on the same day in 1990. I was just starting college and did not live on campus. I parked and realized that I didn't have my keys and then I saw them on the seat. I had to walk to campus police (no cell phone) and ride in the back of the police car across campus. Cop unlocked it for me.
Later on the same day in between classes I did it AGAIN! I had to walk back to campus police again and ride in the back of the and car again with the same guy who unlocked it again. If it were possible to die of shame, then I would have. What a horrible day. Thanks for making me remember that. 😀

Mine was baby poop yellow, 2-door with 5-speed manual. Crappiest (in a manner of speaking) yet most reliable car I ever owned. I worked at a grocery store when I first bought it, and two other stock clerks had the same year & model (one brown, one white IIRC). We learned that all three of us had the same entry key pattern. Too bad I quit that job BEFORE my locked-while-running trick. :ha:

I actually bought a set of those airbags you can slip in car doors and pump up to make a gap.. I see probably 3 people a year in this spot.

More times than I would like to admit, hasn't happened in a few years though, usually when I go for a run at a local park, because I hate running with anything in my pockets I'd usually leave the keys in a hidden place in the car but out of habit I would lock the doors before closing them :laugh:

My jeep doesn't lock itself but did last week.
Here is the funny part ,3 weeks ago I pull big white up to a spray wash. Some dude walks up and says he locked his keys in his car. I'm handy with it wnd have all my tools. I cut wood wedges ,pry open the top passenger door at the top and after some f***ing about get him open. So I think I should get those air bag things because see 2 3 people a year Lock thier keys , bags show up so I toss em in my truck.. week later it's me ..took the shuttle home got big white and used my air bags..took all 3 bags to pry open my door enough but got it.

Pro tip ,always do passenger door because if you break something the drivers door still good.

I don't think I've ever done this, not because I'm smart or prepared or anything, it just hasn't happened.

I'm stupid and absentminded so I'll probably do it some day.
