When the casting process lets down a movie or tv series

Maggie Gyllenhaal always seems to cause in a negative reaction in people that I have never really understood.

David Schwimmer in Band of Brothers. Everybody says "he was actually really good in it and doesn't detract from the experience", but I completely disagree.

Schwimmer was so good in BoB. I've never heard of anyone say he was terrible in his role. He nailed the douche canoe trait quite well.

Jennifer Lawrence in the X-Men films. They keep giving her more and more screen time as the films go along too.

It's commonly pointed out as something that takes people out of it (or that kills the immersion) initially, but that's usually dismissed by people who think it's just a familiarity/type-casting/reputation thing rather than anything wrong with the performance. Personally, I didn't like the performance and thought it was more than just a familiarity/reputation thing.

Stephen Lack in Scanners

The guy was absolutely awful and had nothing remotely resembling acting talent

The rest of the cast carries film and prevents him from destroying it

The Third Man, so many good performances, but I thought the lead actor was awful, Joseph Cotten.
