When is a spoiler, no longer a spoiler?

Good thread. Honestly the entertainment forum bugs me with "No spoilers!" Here is my rule:

- TV Show: If it's aired, it's not a spoiler.
- Movie: If it's released and at the theatre - not a spoiler.
- Sporting event: Your fault for missing it.. don't go online.

The only thing I think is fair is if a book is being made into the movie, don't spoil the movie thread until the movie comes out. It's not the book thread. It's the movie thread. Spoilers can be talked about once the movie is released.

I agree with this to an extent but I think there should be some type of short grace period for people to catch up to everyone else. Doesn't have to be anything more than a week. Not like any real fans will be waiting that long in the first place.

But yeah if you don't want spoilers avoid places of conversation

I think when the thread is clearly labeled and the show or movie has already aired it's not a spoiler. People should avoid the thread if they are behind.

Not everyone goes out to the theaters right away. My friend didn't see star wars 7 until the last week it was in circulation at our theater.

Fair enough. I definitely agree with that.

What I would do if I was not seeing it on release day, is simply not show up in the thread until after I saw it. It's my responsibility, not theirs. But I do like RV's grace period point.

As far as HF is concerned, my opinion is:

Movie - For major plot twists, use spoiler tags until the movie is finished with its first run. There are plenty of reasons to want to talk about a movie you haven't seen yet. Once the first run is over, the plot points are "history" so to speak. (obviously there are times when it's still kind of dickish not to use spoiler tags, like talking about the ending of an M. Night Shyamalan movie)

TV shows - I'd give it a week. TV isn't like the movies where a lot of people have to wait weeks to be able to see it. You either watch it or you don't, the series keeps moving along, and it's not smart to go looking for online discussion if you're behind. (again, obvious exceptions like talking about the end of a series finale)

Sports - Go to dtmts.com before you log on. Otherwise it's your own fault.

As far as the wider world goes, I think a simple "have you seen it yet?" in conversation is all you really need.

List of things that were massively spoiled for me that actually bothered me.

Youre not actually Big Boss.

Light kills L.

Itachi was not really a bad guy.
