When does ROD start getting criticized?

Every game has been a 1 goal game this series. Technically Canes could be up 3-0rn if their pp did anything.

Gotta sort that out. How much blame do you put on him for that?

You can say that every time with them though

But them not going all the way is not on the coach, it’s on the Gm

Skill wise they don’t have a top tier roster yet they keep getting quality results

I feel that Rod is only great at winning series when his team are comfortable favourites

They lack the star power. Aho and Geuntzel are their only two players top 50 in scoring. Aho is far from a game-changing superstar.

Fact of the matter is you need one or more of those caliber of players at key positions on your squad. The Canes remind me of a very good version of those Minnesota Wild teams in the early/mid 2010’s. Talent up and down the roster, good depth, sound everywhere, but no one who is going to take a series over.

This is the trouble with analytics poking its head again. Locations of shots doesn’t correlate to quality of shots. Yeah the Canes are analytical darlings but you’d expect a lot better results based on how effective the numbers say they are.

Every year a goalie has number like this vs them because Carolina's game plan focuses on low danger point shots and stuff from the perimeter. It's almost entirely empty calories. Bob last year was similar, ridiculous looking numbers, but it wasn't really that tough of a workload in terms of dangerous scoring chances.
No, Igor specificically does this every year. He has like 40 GSAx in 30 playoff games.

Why didn't the Islanders?
Why didn't the Devils?

Why, when McDavid or Makar play so well we go, "oh they are great players, that's what they do" but when goaltender does well we go "oh that's not actually the goaltender, the team they play is bad"?

Because those two teams were unable to take care of the puck well enough to deal with the chaos Carolina tries to create. It's a good strategy against worse teams but one you start hitting the best teams in the NHL it gets handled. This has happened so many times now it's insane people continue to be surprised.
Is that really the case?

They took a f***ton of shots in the slot.

They just got Goalie'd.
Sometimes you just gotta tip your hat to a goalie this good.

They are literally equal on inner slot shots according to this chart. Money Puck's model has a huge bias towards volume and this chart is proof of it.

Last year they were badly injured for the Florida series. While I think you are trying to make it like a Leafs situation, they have won I think 8 playoff series in the Brind’Amour era. It’s more a question of getting over the hump than some outright design flaw.

Devise a system that doesn't just fling bullshit low percentage shots from wherever the split second they have an open lane?

It'll get you by the bad and mediocre teams in the regular season, but that's not going to beat a team with defensive structure and a goaltender with a pulse...
They've gotten past Saros and Sorokin in recent years. They basically put Rask into retirement.

Yep more like Sharks or Caps of the past than Toronto.

The other side of the coin is… they’ve been equal to the team that leads them 3-0. This is hauntingly familiar after last year’s sweep where every game was a coin flip.

In this respect, they’re on an insane run of bad coin flips. If we reverse the outcome of OT games, they’re leading this series 2-0 and last year’s series was tied 2-2. Someone has to win OT games and it has gone the other way 5 times in a row. That’s just plain bad luck.

I mean, Stl made it happen. Can’t think of other examples, but they’re there. I agree Rod should not be in trouble, but if the idea is to perfect this squad and system and it consistently falls just short- maybe some adjustment is needed.

I would like to criticize the "is it time to criticize" threads. For the love of God this forum has enough tropes. Do we need another?

Generational gripe ainec. Don’t pretend to ask the question and then try to open up the conversation- just say “hey, does Rod deserve any blame? I kinda feel he does because XYZ, let’s discuss it.” You’re opening up the conversation because you have an opinion, don’t tiptoe around that.

Rod Brindamour has to be the WORST coach when it comes to winning road playoff games. I really feel as if his record benefits from home wins as well. He's had at least a few series where his team lost at least every road game as well (Boston AND NYR Series included)

Carolina themselves are okay, but Rod is a very meh coach come playoff time. the man flat out will cry to the referees

When a team struggles on the road, it typically comes down to line matching.

As noted many times, the Canes don’t have a high octane line that can just take over a game in spite of good defenders. They’re built to have complementary scoring up and down the lineup, but only have a couple of players who can really pull a rabbit out of the hat offensively. When they’re on the road, it gets a lot harder to separate those guys from the opponents’ best defenders, and it also gets harder to staple Slavin to the other team’s superstar. “Mysteriously” the Canes look like a different team when Rod doesn’t control those dynamics.

Well at least we’ve got the Islanders to make us look good.
