Your the GM who would you trade, sign, buyout, etc this off season.

Nothing earth shattering. Maybe a few small moves. Wait out Vinny until he retires, wait to buyout Umberger until after the following season when his buyout penalty drops significantly. Stay the course and build from within. It's not sexy, but that's the plan.

You can re-sign some of the guys who need contracts after next year (Jake, Raffl, Couts, etc)

That should be hexys plan as well. Obviously we also need to find a backup goalie and a new coaching staff. I would also look into getting a top 6 LW for one of our centers depending on what happens in the draft.

there's no quick fix, so just keeping it realistic

-Find a real coach and a back-up goalie
-try and trade Vinny, Umberger, Rinaldo, MacDonald, Grossmann, L. Schenn (the last 2 are the easiest to move)
-explore options with B. Schenn and Couturier
-try and bring in some forwards that can play physically
-re-sign VdV, White, Del Zotto, Colaiacovo (7th defenseman)
-go with Streit, MacDonald (no one will take him), Del Zotto, Schultz, Gudas, Colaiacovo and a rookie (probably Alt, since I doubt Hagg, Gostisbehere, Sanheim or Morin will be rushed)

Resign V, Raffl, MDZ, exc..
Build from the draft and focus on our young D core..

well I think one of Luke Schenn or Grossmann are gone anyway with Gudas here on a reasonable cap hit.
Package the Schenn brothers for a scoring winger.
sign a backup goalie not named Emery
replace Berube with a legit NHL coach with a clue.
send Rinaldo to the AHL forever.

I would try to sign a couple of college free agents and hope to hit a home run like with Read. Also look at the Swedish leagues for more people like Bellemare and Raffl. I would attempt a trade to get Annti Raanta from Chicago as our backup and try to free the Flyers of Grossmann.

College FAs I'm interested in:
Ahti Oksanen LW/D
Matt O'Connor G (who isn't?)
Oleg Yevenko D (maybe)
Drake Caggiula C/LW

Then find a new coach who can teach the team breakouts and decent passing. Probably try to get Voracek a new contract before the season starts. Ship Rinaldo to the AHL. Sign Vandevelde and White to another cheap contract. See about MDZ and his contract too.

Schenn - Giroux - Voracek
Read - Couturier - Simmonds
Raffl - Laughton - Umberger
VandeVelde - Bellemare - White

Schultz - Streit
MDZ - Schenn
MacDonald - Gudas

Then let the kids fight for roster spots and force out the vets.

Viewing next season (at least) as another rebuilding year (2016 draft is also strong):

1- Fire Berube, hire Tippett if available otherwise possibly look to Europe for new coach, but at the least outside of the organization and it's former players. If Povorov/Werenski are drafted this year then in 2 years (3 max), the D will likely include at least all of Morin, Ghost, Sanheim and Povorov/Werenski. A defensvie coach who is good with player development is needed to handle such a young D.

2- UFA targets:

G - Greiss as backup - 1 year max

ELC aged (consider signing for this year and burning one year off if competitive and possible):
Zaitsev, RHD
Panarin, LW
Bailey, F
O'Connor, G

3- Resign:

VandeVelde - similar contract
White - similar contract
MDZ - try to get 2-3 years max under 3mm, but be fine with a 1 yr around 3.5mm if awarded by arbitrator and then look to sell at deadline.
Voracek - extend him this summer targeting around 7mm cap hit (probably gets 7.5mm).
Colaiacovo - similar contract. Fine as a number 8.
Manning - similar contract. Fine as a AHL-NHL tweener. Good in AHL.
Raffl - extend him this summer on the cheap if possible. Around 2 years 1.75mm per max.
Zepp- similar deal.

4- Anticipate trading both L.Schenn and Grossmann by the deadline at the latest (when their values will likely be highest), allowing young D a chance to earn a spot.

5- Draft:

-If win lottery draft McDavid and run naked down Broad St. with a aluminum foil Stanley cup
-Take BPA. If a D is available, take them all else equal (if two D, take a RHD over LHD). If a center is available over a winger, take the center all else equal.
-Do not draft a goalie in the top four rounds ever. They are a crap shoot at age 18. For every Stolarz, you get 9 Morrison's.
-Do not draft a potential bottom sixer, especially goons, ever again. VV, PEB and white are all free agents. Good fourth liners are available for free.

6- Try and trade AMac, Vinny and Umberger, but be content to let them sit in the press box in seasons ahead until more favorable buyouts while rebuilding

7- Trade/Waive:

-Rinaldo for a 7th otherwise be fine with losing him on waivers after training camp.

8- Patience:

-Couturier. Don't trade. If he does not develop into 2C, he is still a 3C on a cup contender.
-B.Schenn. Unlikely to develop into a cup caliber 2C, but could remain a decent mid-6 winger. Don't overpay next summer.
-Laughton. Allow him to continue to develop in the AHL if he doesn't excel in camp. Unlikely to develop into a 2C, could develop into a cup caliber 3C or a mid-6 winger.
-Morin. He is knocking on the door and trade Grossmann/L.Schenn if he makes it. Likely first of the D prospects to transition into lineup.
-Ghost. Probably needs at least half season in AHL before being called up.
-Sanheim. Give him 9 games if he impresses. Still too physically immature though and team Canada experience would help development.
-Hagg. Give him time in the AHL/callup potential.
-Alt. Give him time in the AHL/callup potential.
-Cousins. Give him time in AHL unless he impresses in camp and preseason games at NHL speed.
-Stolarz. More AHL starts. He continues to impress, allow him a few NHL games by seasons end.

9- Outliners:

-If win lottery, McDavid starts as 2C next season. If Povorov is drafted at 7/8, he has a very good chance of making the team given his poise and physical maturity.

Start of year:

Raffl-Giroux-Simmonds
Read-Couturier-Voracek
B.Schenn/Laughton/White/Umberger/Cousins/Panarin/Bailey
VV-PEB-White/Umberger
Lecavalier

Schultz-Streit
MDZ-Gudas
Morin-Grossmann/L.Schenn/Zaitsev
AMac

After deadline:

Streit-Schultz
MDZ-Gudas
Morin-Ghost/Zaitsev
AMac

10- Summer '16 into season 16/17:

-BPA in strong draft. Extra picks from Grossmann/L.Schenn.
-Look to possibly keep Streit/Schultz until deadline '17 (unless Streit traded at deadline for great return at deadline '16 or draft).
-Top pick from draft '16 could be playing in upcoming season.
-Sanheim likely to make team in camp.
-Resign Couturier/B.Schenn to what they have earned. If no prospect 2C is developing quickly enough, look to upgrade B.Schenn via trade.
-Trade Read if he doesn't bounce back.
-Buyout both Lecavalier and Umberger. Cheap young players mean it is affordable.

Still try to trade some of the dead weight (Vinny, Umberger, Grossmann) and I have put very little into what I'd look for in the UFA market. I'd listen to offers on Streit but I'd have to be blown away to trade him.

I would go a little Sam Hinkie and blow it up. The Flyers are probably not realistic contenders for 3-4 years. By that time Giroux will be 30-31 and will start to decline soon after not leaving a very big window to compete. Here is a study of all players and it shows even strength point production peaks at 24 holds steady until 29 and rapidly declines after 31. http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2014/3/13/5500522/nhl-scoring-stats-rates-age-analysis

Now Giroux is exceptional and not your average player but before you say that graph is bunk here are his even strength points per game numbers from his breakout season at 23 years old (I used his age at the end of the season since his birthday is in January)
2011 Age 23 0.610 even strength points per game
2012 Age 24 0.688
2013 Age 25 0.541*. Strike shortened year
2014 Age 26 0.598
2015 Age 27 0.439

Now I don't think he is declining as fast as this years numbers show but his even strength points per game have been going down since its peak at 24, matching up with that graph. And yes power play points do count but the last 4 cups champions all were the number 1 even strength team in the playoffs. Power plays are much harder to come by playoff time. So the Flyers could need a new number 1 center by the time the defense prospects are hitting their stride.

So I would trade Giroux to Nashville for Seth jones ++
Trade up in the draft to get Hanifin even if it costs Simmonds. Now the Flyers have a left righty top pair for the next 10-15 years much like Weber and Suter were.
Next year will be brutal but the Flyers will just need centers which they have shown great ability to draft.

I'd like to see a speedy shoot first college ufa signed as the ufa nhl market isnt too big and get PEB on a wing. Even if its 4th line. Give Schenn an ultimatum or similar bashing as jake got about shape and hard work over the summer and see what happens (resign the guys like Coots, Jake Raffl) kinda show Schenn he is in the dog house and now fighting for a contract like MDZ did and let the kid play next year. Give Morin his shot. Seems most NHL ready

Raffl - G - Jake
UFA - Coots - Simmonds
Read - Laughton - Schenn
Vdv - White - PEB

Streit - Shultz
Morin - MDZ
Schenn/Gudas - AMac

New Coaching staff, no "Flyer Guys" replacements
Trade preferably both Luke and Gross, but 1 for sure
Resign White and VV for 1 year each at PEB cap hit
Resign MDZ for 2 years
Waive or trade Zac
Trade Read and Brayden for wingers with speed
Draft a fwd with 1st pick unless Proporov is available
Sign the top College FA goalie
Attempt to move RJ and Vinny, but not happening

I would golf. Lots.
:golfnana:
Anyways:

massive holes: 2C, LW, 2 spots [at least] on the blueline, head coach, backup G

dead weight: Vinny, the Umbergler, Grossmann, LSchenn, Colaiacovo
honorable mention [dead weight]: MacDonald, Zac

not sure how Hext & Co can even address half of that in one offseason...

Colaiacovo is hardly dead weight. He's been fine this year, and would be good as a 7th defenseman since his cap hit would likely remain low

First gotta find a coach. Berube has done some well with lesser players but he has been awful in almost every other aspect. How he is a head coach is mind boggling.

Starting with trades obviously try to trade Umberger, Vinny, and Rinaldo for less crappy deals.

Realistically, trade Grossmann. Kick the tires on a Mark Streit deal. Streit is going to finish top 10 in points for d-men and he might be able to get a good package in terms of trade. Look at what the Schenn Bros can get, a legit #1 LW or a high end D-man and you can make a case to move them.

Im looking to start the season out as

Raffl-Giroux-Simmonds
Read-Couts-Voracek
Laughton-Schenn-White
Umberger-Cousins-Bellmare
Rinaldo and Vinny Scratched please.

Schultz-Streit
MDZ-Schenn
Manning-Gudas
MacDonald

Mason
FIND A BACKUP. What they have done with Mason has been disgusting. Flyers finally have a solid starting goalie and they are abusing him. This is why we can't have nice things.

1- Fire Berube. Hire Guy Boucher. He's been over in Europe coaching and has learned from what happened in TB. He might even be able to make some use of Vinny. Seriously, TB was usually very tough to play against. He laid the foundation for what they are today-a SC contender.
2- Trade the Schenn brothers for a LW. Keep Grossmann until TDL to get most value for him. Send Rinaldo to LV for the duration of his contract.
3- Stay away from UFAs in the off season. They usually cost too much. There are guys within the system to fill out the bottom six forward spots.
4- Resign the following: MDZ, Raffl, White.
5- Extend Jake
6- Draft: Rantanen in first round and another forward with the TB selection. Second round and on should be TBPA. Give priority to another goaltender unless they sign BU's O'Connor..

Line up for 15-16:

new LW-Giroux-Voracek
Read-Couturier-Simmonds
Raffl-Laughton-Umberger
Leier-PEB-White
Lecavalier

Schultz-Streit
MDZ-Gudas
AMac-Grossmann
Alt

After deadline:

Streit-Schultz
MDZ-Gudas
Morin-AMac
Ghost

he is hot garbage that belongs nowhere near an NHL roster
but since he's a ufa it's going to be a moot point as they ain't reupping him

I'm never opposed to the trade giroux idea simply because i don't see this team doing anything during his prime. But if you do, you need to be coming out with mcdavid or eichel in this draft.
