What would it take for a player NOT in the Finals to win the Conn Smythe?

How would they even present that Conn Smythe on the ice, through videoconference? Can't exactly fly a guy whose team lost in the previous round to a possible 3-4 clincher games in the Finals for a vote he might not even win.

I vaguely remember a short-lived campaign to get Peter Forsberg the Smythe one year when he didn't make the Finals but I don't even think something extreme like Crosby setting a record for playoff goals in 20 games, and getting hurt toward the end of the ECF would move the needle there.

Considering this award is decided by human voters, and those voters are from the same pool of people who won't even give a guy the Norris if his team doesn't make the playoffs, I'm going to go with "you only have a chance if your team makes the finals".

It's close to impossible. In 2002 Forsberg lead the playoffs in scoring by four points despite not making the finals, and yet he wasn't even close to winning it.
