I went with Ebony & Ivory, mainly because it's shocking the combined talents of Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder produced such dreck.

A few of these aren't so bad... "Can't Help Falling in Love" is just a cover in a particular musical style. Not sure what else is supposed to be done there, it's not like UB40 wrote the actual song and they didn't cover it badly within the boundaries of their own style. A few of the others are just corny soft-rock music, but not exceptionally bad in the scheme of corny soft rock.

"Ebony & Ivory" is an actually terrible song. I think "We Are the World" was just as bad for mostly the same reasons. There's something transcendently bad about compiling a bunch of legendary talent, making a huge marketing deal out of the world-changing song they are about to unleash, and having it turn out to be sappy sentimental garbage which isn't even catchy let alone appealing.

Here's some more underrated bad ones (1990's and before), IMO:

Say, Say, Say--Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney
Sugar, Sugar--The Archies
Girl I'm Gonna Miss You--Milli Vanilli
Ghostbusters--Ray Parker Jr.
I Shot The Sheriff--Eric Clapton
Monkey--George Michael
This Is How We Do It--Montell Jordan
Got My Mind Set On You--George Harrison
Release Me--Wilson Phillips

I have to say "Can't Help Falling In Love" by UB40 is just appallingly bad. Which makes it way better than the Corey Hart cover.

I'm not into Bah Humbugging modern music but if we're looking for the worst #1s ever, these options are looking in the wrong era.

I hate the Macarena with a passion

What makes it worse than all the others on this list is that you're guaranteed to hear it many times against your will for the rest of your life at any party or gathering.

Never learned any of the dance moves as a kid, refused to learn them as an adult out of spite. Just like I never watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as a child and refuse to learn the lyrics to the theme song now, which shit DJs will often crack out when they've given up and need a song guaranteed to get all the white people of a certain age turnt.
