There are a bunch of analytics guys who say that Gardiner is the most effective Dman on the leafs but he gets the most hate for almost everything that goes against them.

He's currently a second pairing Dman but what is he really...

#2/3 tweener, he's done better carrying a second pairing than trying to play up on the first so I'll go 2nd pairing. Much like Rielly he's been very good in his usage while dragging a defense partner around that isn't worthy of the minutes. It would be nice to see both of these guys with partners that can carry their weight

a top 4 D who has good offensive instincts but is prone to lapses in judgment while playing in his own zone.

he would do well to be settled by a smart 2 way defender like what Hamhuis did for Bieksa or what Edler did for Ehrhoff, unfortunately the Leafs don't have that D for him and if they did, they would be better suited to putting them with Reilly and hoping Gardiner holds his own

The type of player that always gets so underrated around the league because he isn’t particularly physical and his blunders look particularly ugly.

Toronto would be very smart to keep him.
When do people underrate players because they're soft? That's not really a thing anymore since most players in the league are pretty soft.

Good enough to drive a second pair. to very strong results Would probably look elite next to a stalwart defensive partner. Ugly blunders, but one of the best transition passers in the league. Voted #2, but that's because 2/3 wasn't an option and he's more than just a 2nd pairing "guy"

He's been excellent this year.

He's a legit 2-3 guy. People don't realize how he can eat up minutes in crunch time. He had a bad series against the Bruins last year, but he was very good against Washington the year prior (arguably our best Dman) and when we need a guy to step up and play 30+ minutes he can do it no problem.
