I said it before and I'll say it again but only one time here because its been gone over ad nauseam. Hronek was still on the board when we had our own 2nd. We didn't need an extra second to get him. At the end of their careers it's quite possible that Chycchurn will fill the gap between Hronek and Cholowski making it all a total wash. The trade was as nonsensical then as it is now.

The presence of Hronek on this team didn't doesn't and never will justify the trade seeing as we could have had him anyway and could still end up with a defensive talent deficit once careers are in the books.

And I'll say it again, because I'm fairly certain that I said it when you initially posted this... Chychrun has not done enough to show he is "the best propsect of them all" seeing as Filip Hronek has been a better offensive defenseman than Chychrun full stop since they've both entered the league and Filip Hronek and Patrik Nemeth were just about the only NHL caliber defensemen who played for the Detroit Red Wings in 19-20.

Biega - Butt, bottom pairing okay
Bowey - Butt
Cholowski - Inc. but kinda butt.
Daley - Butt
DeKeyser - Injured basically all year. Inc.
Ericsson - Butt
Goloubef - 2 games. Inc.
Green - Butt
Hronek - NHL level offensive D
Hicketts - 6 games... but Butt.
Lashoff - 9 games... but Butt.
Lindstrom - Inc, he really kinda just got a cup of coffee.
McIlrath - A knuckledragger. Only NHL level skill is punching people.
Nemeth - NHL level defensive D

Whereas Chychrun is on the roster with Goligoski and OEL who are both far better than anything Detroit had. Haven't watched Jason Demers and Niklas Hjalmarsson in Arizona, but if we're comparing them to the stiffs who played middle pairing minutes in Detroit... Hoo boy.

The Wings gave themselves flexibility with that move. They dealt away an empty roster spot with a cap hit of 7.5M, lost 4 draft spots (and took the guy they were rumored to want anyway) and got a second round pick. No matter how much you bleat about it... it wasn't a bad trade. Chychrun or Fabbro or whoever you want is not so materially better than Hronek (if they even are better) that it outweighs the flexibility gained by getting Datsyuk's money off the books. The fact that they signed Nielsen to a 6x5.5M contract and he fell completely off the face of the Earth in play is completely irrelevant to trading Datsyuk's contract. It was a good trade and they squandered the good trade by making a bad signing.

If they don't think Hronek makes it to the third round they could absolutely draft him 46 especially considering how badly they need to stock the D cupboards same reason they drafted Seider at 6.

Sure. And they could have absolutely drafted Filip Larsson at 46 if they wanted to. Doesn't change the fact they took Smith at 46th.

You are the only person in the world that thinks they would have taken Hronek at 46 if they didn't have the extra pick. The only way your scenario is true is if they selected Hronek 46 and Smith 53. Which didn't happen in our universe dimension.

We could have drafted Mantha at 18 and Bertuzzi at 48.

But it doesn’t work like that. Trading down landed us Bert and Hronek, that’s a simple, undisputable fact.

Extra picks are great. Can’t try to rewrite history on the draft picks because you didn’t like how we used the cap space after the fact.

There is nothing irrelivant about Neilsen when the money that was freed up by the trade went directly into signing him. No matter how many stats you post there was a consensus BPA the wings gave up that would probably be our top defenseman right now. No matter what you speculate Hronek was on the board when we had our pick. Becasue Holland got lucky with the throw in asset on the tail end of the trade can't change the fact that he gave up the better player in the draft while facing the need for a rebuild to pick up a dime store center on a number 1/2 contract for 6 years.

Most of the repair work that Holland did after Lidstrom retired was done through free agency, you really have to look at the whole picture. And, it's really hard to try to second guess a draft.

I think, overall, the deterioration of our roster would have been quicker, leading to maybe higher draft pics. Which we may have used wisely or got lucky on... or not.

I still agree trying to compete was the right decision, but the retirement of our greatest assets is how we got here. (Not trading Jarnkroks and Janmarks.)

Boston traded Bourque, I might have a look back on how that affected their future.

It's all good. We just need another 1989 draft and we're good to go.

Lol, well if that's all we need!
