I said it before and I'll say it again but only one time here because its been gone over ad nauseam. Hronek was still on the board when we had our own 2nd. We didn't need an extra second to get him. At the end of their careers it's quite possible that Chycchurn will fill the gap between Hronek and Cholowski making it all a total wash. The trade was as nonsensical then as it is now.
The presence of Hronek on this team didn't doesn't and never will justify the trade seeing as we could have had him anyway and could still end up with a defensive talent deficit once careers are in the books.
And I'll say it again, because I'm fairly certain that I said it when you initially posted this... Chychrun has not done enough to show he is "the best propsect of them all" seeing as Filip Hronek has been a better offensive defenseman than Chychrun full stop since they've both entered the league and Filip Hronek and Patrik Nemeth were just about the only NHL caliber defensemen who played for the Detroit Red Wings in 19-20.

Whereas Chychrun is on the roster with Goligoski and OEL who are both far better than anything Detroit had. Haven't watched Jason Demers and Niklas Hjalmarsson in Arizona, but if we're comparing them to the stiffs who played middle pairing minutes in Detroit... Hoo boy.
The Wings gave themselves flexibility with that move. They dealt away an empty roster spot with a cap hit of 7.5M, lost 4 draft spots (and took the guy they were rumored to want anyway) and got a second round pick. No matter how much you bleat about it... it wasn't a bad trade. Chychrun or Fabbro or whoever you want is not so materially better than Hronek (if they even are better) that it outweighs the flexibility gained by getting Datsyuk's money off the books. The fact that they signed Nielsen to a 6x5.5M contract and he fell completely off the face of the Earth in play is completely irrelevant to trading Datsyuk's contract. It was a good trade and they squandered the good trade by making a bad signing.
