Just writing my post (above) pisses me off!
The kids on here will find it hard to believe that there was a time -- as late as the early 1990s, and in some ways even into the 2000s -- when Edmonton was considered the gold-standard of hockey franchises. Circa 1990 we were talking about Edmonton as the equivalent of the Montreal Canadiens as the winningest and most respected franchise in pro-hockey. Even into the 2000s, I remember Sports Illustrated (I think) ranking the Oilers as the 2nd or 3rd-best pro-sports franchise in all of North American sports.
Now, it's gone the opposite direction to where they're the Bad News Bears of the NHL.
