Speculation: Weiss to Toronto?

Disclaimer: I'm not basing this on any rumors or inside info. Just a thought worth discussing.

It looks like Dave Bolland is headed to Florida for 6/7 years at $5+ million per.

The Leafs have shown interest in Weiss in the past. I think they were one of the final teams in on him (in addition to Detroit and St. Louis) last year. Part of the reason he wanted to come to Detroit was to be close to his hometown.

The Leafs obviously love making questionable decisions.

Any chance the Wings can unload Weiss to Toronto?

Nope. He has NMC.
I know -- but if they make it clear that they don't want him here, why wouldn't he be willing to waive it?

NMCs don't make a player entirely untradeable. Plenty of guys with NMCs/NTCs have been traded over the years.

Why trade someone who as long as healthy will allow the euro twins to play together? I think he deserves a fair shot this season.

I think we can do that regardless of Weiss. We can play Sheahan #2 with Helm #3 or vice versa.

The cap savings would allow us to spend a bit more on our defensive UFA targets.

Yeah. His value is zero atm.

I want to give him another chance at becoming season, and if he doesn't get his game going, it will be time for this:

Stephen Weiss is 32 years old on the buyout date of June 30, 2015, setting the buyout ratio at 2/3 and the total buyout cost at $10,000,000, in addition to $1,000,000 in signing bonuses, spread over 6 years. His contract was originally valued at $24,500,000 beginning in 2013 and ending in 2018, with $15,000,000 remaining from the buyout year forward (which does not include $1,000,000 in remaining signing bonuses that are paid regardless of buyout). The following is a season-by-season breakdown of the buyout. A negative buyout cap hit indicates a credit.

BUYOUT DETAILS
Code:
SEASON	SALARY	CAP HIT	BUYOUT	SAVINGS	BUYOUT CAP HIT
2015-16	$5,500,000	$4,900,000	$1,666,667	$3,833,333	$1,066,667
2016-17	$5,500,000	$4,900,000	$1,666,667	$3,833,333	$1,066,667
2017-18	$4,000,000	$4,900,000	$1,666,667	$2,333,333	$2,566,667
2018-19	$0 $0 $1,666,667	-$1,666,667	$1,666,667

Assuming the Leafs are stupid enough to even want him, I would only send him there if we were signing a legitimate 2C like a Stastny. Right now I don't view Sheahan as a contender quality 2C especially after that Bruins series.

If he has a clean bill of health and the Wings retain some salary, I think its doable. He had multiple teams interested him at 5 years, $25 million just 1 year ago. It's a good buy low opportunity for other teams if his medicals come back fine.

That's a big conditional for a guy who's only been able to play in ~58% of his team's games in the past 3 seasons (and some of those he played hurt when he shouldn't have).

Frankly I think he's too much of an injury risk when combined with Helm's issues, Zetterberg's chronic back problems and Datsyuk getting older. I doubt we could move him, but I'd be absolutely down for it if a situation presented itself.

If he's damaged goods and going to be on LTIR all year, how does that effect the cap? Can they still go over 10% in the off season and then place him on LTIR when the season starts to make the cap work?

Yes.

The Wings will give Weiss a shot, if it starts falling apart, they could probably be the team to take Buffalo up on their offer of buying a first round pick. Would Weiss waive? I am not sure, but if it really isn't working he might be willing to go to the other place two hours from home and find his game with no pressure.

I don't think anyone said he's going to LTIR eligible to start the season. That would be great, but don't think it'll be that clear cut.

Hilarious how he has no value at all and is untradeable . I never wanted him last summer this time and was clowned on here for wanting Flip instead. Also wanted Iggy over Alfie...

Do you guys remember when Weiss first signed, how Babs told him to only come here if he was very competitive and was going to basically play and work his tail off? Obviously if you're injured you're injured and you shouldn't play, but I wonder how much that conversation had to do with him trying to quietly play through it in the beginning of the season.

And let me make it clear I'm not in any way attempting to blame Babs at all. I want Babs to want competitive players. It's just one of those things you look back on and it all kind of makes sense.

I'll say for Weiss what I said last season when it became clear he wasn't coming back: I'm willing to give him a fresh start. Get healthy and then let's see where you're at. Because if he's even a resemblance of his former self he'd be a huge asset and make us a nightmare to match up with up front.

I think Toronto and their fan base would shudder at the idea of having, both, Clarkson's and Weiss' contracts on the books.

I actually think an even-steven swap for the two players would be good for both the players and teams.

Toronto needs help down the middle and Detroit needs a bit more jam on the Wings.
And I think Clarkson needs to find new scenery - for his own sake.
He tries way too hard to be the next Wendel Clark. He'll never be the same player he was while in T.O.

Toronto makes questionable signing decisions, yes.

We are a smart trading and will not be trading for albatross contractions (Clarkson 2.0)

Right here
I noticed that Weiss had a surgery April 30 to clear up scar tissue for the sports hernia. Does anyone know anything about his recovery time/ if he'll be ready for the season? Solid third/fourth line centre behind helm/sheahan/franzen.

Wings braintrust is smart, but not perfect - see Tootoo signing.
And if they sign Cleary over Alfredsson, (heck, if they even sign Cleary) that only helps prove they can be just as dumb as other organizations.
Clarkson's contract is terrible, but I still think he can be a good fit with this team. I wouldn't be surprised if he could score 25+ goals while providing grit and muscle to a lineup that sorely needs some.

I don't understand why people have given up on Weiss already. You try playing hockey with a sports hernia.
