Weather issues in Dallas caused major headaches for several NBA teams that need to enter or leave the city via plane.

Home teams incur additional costs related to arena/stadium: more employee costs to clean/reset, more employee costs for ushers, concessions/merchandise sellers. And technical (resetting tickers to allow new entry).

Visiting teams incur additional travel costs, all the game clean up/resetting (medical supplies and other things new every game).

League incurs additional travel costs for officials, etc.


Some local charities may benefit from donations of unused food.

Some local companies may benefit that provide services to teams, visitors.

What a joke. Dolphins/Chiefs have to play when it's going to be -5 with win chills in the -20s, but it snows a little in Buffalo and they have to postpone? Give me a break. Football is supposed to be played in the elements.

It's because they don't want tens of thousands of people driving in a blizzard. There are going to be 50 mph windbursts and snow is expected to potentially hit a foot and a half.

Doesn't mean that the government shouldn't try to mitigate deaths and injuries and not overextend emergency services, or that private businesses should also put their own employees at risk or be happy with a lower gate turnout.

My initial reaction was "Come on, football in a blizzard is awesome! Don't be sissies!"

But it's really not about the game; it's about the city's resources. You can't tell everyone that it's so dangerous you can't be on the road.... unless you have a Bills ticket. And you can't go save 70,000 people driving home from the game when they get stuck.

Yet Dallas Stars canceled games for an inch or 2 of snow a couple of years ago. Gimme a break , the game is played indoors. What a joke.

Texas was under power conservation orders. Wouldn't be a good look to have the game happen when people are losing power.

I don't care about the fans. I highly doubt the roads are going to be safe 24 hours later. It's like any other event, sometimes things come up and you can't make the event.

It’s the complete right thing to do for public safety. Conditions are ideal for lake effect snow after a warmer than average December. We’ve seen what that’s done to Buffalo storms in the past.

The take can be whatever you perceive it to be. It's their choice to go to the game or not......

Goes to show that some people are allergic to credibility.

As Portland toggled between sleet and snow today, the reason it’s news here is because it’s rare. Really only snows every other year here. The fact that we got snow and it was less than 20° here today is probably more rare than years where there’s more than one snow event (about every 10 years). So Portland doesn’t have more than 2-4 snow plows, and the real need for those is in Eastern Oregon and the Cascades. By the way, we were lucky that the snow was light, especially to the east, where the winds coming out of the Columbia Gorge were a sustained 30 mph (and in the Gorge, up to 100 mph gusts), otherwise it would be a wicked blizzard condition, possibly worse than the Buffalo video.

Usually when it snows here, it’s right around 32°, and the predominant factors are moisture coming via the “Pineapple Express” from Hawaii while the colder air comes from the east through the Gorge. Sub-20° and the wind are the real problems today.

I just hate the whole "They postponed the game because of weather!" thing. The conditions for playing football just was not a factor. If they had a 70,000 room dorm next to the stadium that everyone could go to before the storm and stay at until the storm is done, there'd be no problem playing football during the storm.

There's a state of emergency which bans travel; because they can't keep the roads safe.

Maybe it's my time as a New Orleans resident: You don't evacuate when a hurricane is coming because of rain and wind; you leave because power is definitely getting knocked out and you'd much rather take a vacation to somewhere with air conditioning than stay.

I will qualify comments. What happened here this weekend:

The Arizona schools had their women’s basketball teams up at Oregon and Oregon State for Friday games just before the ice storm hit down in the southern Willamette Valley. They weren’t going to get out Saturday, so for the games Sunday, both schools declared the campuses closed, but played the games “behind closed doors.” There were some stragglers in both arenas, but probably no concessions… and very few people to keep people from entering if they wanted.

Similar in Portland as the Portland State men were scheduled against Weber State on Saturday, Weber made it in on Friday, “closed door game” that wasn’t really closed. In all cases, tickets can be exchanged for future games. BTW, Portland got a mix of snow, sleet, graupel, maybe a couple other forms.

The Winterhawks played in Seattle (eh, Kent) Friday night and bussed home just before everything hit. Seattle tried to bus down to Portland, but turned around halfway as the mess grew and the game was postponed.

Nothing fell from Saturday night on, the uncommon cold basically kept the snow as powder, so the Blazers played Sunday night without restriction, but promised to exchange tickets for those unwilling to go. Didn’t seem like many people showed up.

So the Blazers have something to learn, but for the most part, the mitigations made sense.
