OT: We have the first overall pick in the Carolina Hurricanes Bandwagon Playoff draft.

I didn't see anything on our boards about so I thought I'd get the discussion rolling. We could either go BPA and pick Carolina's Identity, or go for organizational need and pick a Canes-Pens fan (I know there's one on the board I just don't remember their name)

The draft this year is weak, very little depth available so trading down seems like a poor idea.

Not sure what any of that means.

The Hurricanes have an annual tradition of having their posters "drafted" to playoff teams so that they have something to do for the post season. There's a thread on the main boards about it.

Tarheelhockey. He's been on the buisness forum trying his best to represent the canes well. Its a sad story (Carolina's future that is).

I've always respected Tarheel has a poster. Usually level-headed and knows the game well.

They've done this a couple of times now and I don't think we've ever had a pick that actually hung out once drafted.

Tarheel is one of my favorite posters on the boards, I say yes.

Plus unlike previous bandwagon draftees he may actually post here more than once

I really doubt I ever would if I was in their shoes. Just sounds extra frustrating to me.

They do have to sign up to be involved...but yeah, I agree. If the Pens were out of it year after year and I was involved it'd all depend on who drafted me. Pens rivals? Obviously not. Teams I just don't like (i.e. Anaheim)? Nah. A team I'm generally indifferent about (i.e. the Alberta teams)? Probably. A team I have a soft spot for (i.e. Minnesota)? Yeah, I'd go along for it.

So...yeah, picking a guy who kinda likes the Pens makes sense, especially after previous draftees tend to check in once and never be seen again

garnettpalmetto is a Canes/Pens fan, and like tarheelhockey, he is a mod. I only point that out because it's an indication of level-headed-ness.

tarheelhockey is a great contributor...the only pause I have is whether he'd be as active as garnettpalmetto in discussing the Pens in particular. He's much more active on our forum than garnettpalmetto, but it's possible that garnettpalmetto would be more active in talking about the Pens, specifically. You might want to do a "pre-draft interview"...just like the NHL clubs do, right?

Then why sign up for it?

I concur with you and Big, though ... my vote goes to Tarheel (tarheelhockey), also.

Fair point... I could see myself being excited about having someone to root for and be engaged in the playoffs... But then when it happens I am just bitter and don't actually care

I like this idea very much. Just point em both to this thread and start the interviews!
I need to know their charachter and compete levels!

ETA: Looks like garnettpalm isn't participating so Tarheel it is.

Tarheel could put us over the top. A lot of great posters on this board but what have they done for us lately?;)

I could get excited about some teams, but could also see myself not being willing to jump into the mess that some of the forums have.

Tarheel without a second thought. Him and Cole would give us the one-two punch of hockey knowledge that no other fanbase could match.

I thought I felt my ears burning.

The reason why I'm not participating is that I have a special clause in my Fan Contract by which my rights revert to Pittsburgh in the (likely) event that the Pens make the playoffs but the Hurricanes don't - so you're kind of stuck with me. I don't post around here much mainly because I have my hands full with the craziness that is the Hurricanes board and as a partial season ticket holder I tend to follow the Canes more closely. I'm not on the board, but gotta say you can't go wrong with Tarheelhockey. That said, if DaveG's participating he's got some Pens blood in his veins as he's from West Virginia. Backyard Brawlers beware, though, he's a confirmed Mountaineer.

About me - I'm a child of the Pittsburgh diaspora. My Dad was born and raised in Dunbar, PA and after getting out of the Air Force decided to retire to South Carolina. I grew up a fan of the Pirates (tough to do in Braves country after 1992), Steelers, and Pens. After I moved to NC in 2005 I also became a Canes fan after watching them beat the crap out of the Flyers. That said, I was at the Canes home opener that season (the infamous shootout loss where Cam Ward stoned Mario, Palffy, and Sid) wearing my Lemieux jersey and cheering for the Pens. My Pirates claims to fame are having an autograph I got from Neil Walker when he played in Low-A and having sat in front of Cam Bonifay at a Capital City Bombers game when I was in college. I split my fandom about evenly when the Pens and Canes play (in the old scheduling format I'd give each team a home game and away game at their respective barns) and, ideally, would love every game between the two to go into OT so each team gets at least a point. I have a fairly healthy Pens jersey collection in my closet:

  • Authentic Home (Dark) Lemieux (2002-07)
  • Replica Home Crosby with Pittsburgh 250 patch and 2008 Cup Finals patch
  • Replica 2008 Winter Classic Fleury
  • Replica Away Malkin with 2009 Cup Finals patch
  • Replica 2011 Winter Classic Malkin
  • Replica 2014 Stadium Series Letang
  • Replica Alternate Dupuis (2014-2016) with 2016 Cup Finals patch

I know the last two are technically jersey fouls but they have special meaning to me since Letang missed the Stadium Series game due to a stroke (my mother suffered two strokes, one of which led to her death) and Duper had to retire due to his pulmonary embolism issues (which is what I lost my Dad to).

I've not made it to a game at Consol yet but fully intend to. In my personal life, I'm a craft beer fan, a wine fan, and enjoy cooking and baking. In college sports I'm a die-hard fan of my alma mater, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks (hence my username).

Anything else y'all/yinz would like to know to establish my black and gold cred?

Not sure what any of that means.

Yeah me neither. In some of the weirder **** that goes on here, this is one of those things I would rather do without. If fans of sad sack teams want to follow the Pens during the run, go for it, don't use the excuse of some moronic draft to like another team.

I don't think any of us even needed to know any of that. If you want to post and support the Pens, there's no need to post your mini-bio to justify it. We're a pretty open group as long as you acknowledge Chris Kunitz is a flaming piece of **** of a hockey player, we're good with you.
