Don't hate it for 5th next year. He has his warts and isn't what he once was but he's an upgrade in some areas Buffalo lacks.

The move could also make sense as a precursor to add depth for someone he's moving out.

Very low risk move, imho. All for it.

Simmonds had an 8 team no trade list. I guess the Sabres weren't on it, or maybe he waived to play for a playoff contender.
Devils assistant Mike Grier might have put in a good word for the Sabres.
I think Botterill wanted to send a message that they're not giving up on the playoffs.
We're going to regret not selling.
