This core is never going to come together just so, outperform its peak performance from a couple of years ago, and compete for anything meaningful now that every member of it bar Tkachuk is on the wrong side of the aging curve, so asking Sutter to perform his corpse reanimation routine on our mediocre roster and drag them into the playoffs for another year or two is pointless.

Treliving should have taken the initiative in the offseason and jumpstarted a rebuild, but it’s career suicide for a GM to push such a plan without buy-in from the owner. We could have saved ourselves another 2-3 years of bleak, directionless mediocrity and set ourselves up for success by targeting the deep 2023 draft, but oh well. Let’s try to limp into the playoffs by handing out terrible FA contracts for another several years instead.
