Even after the record is broken, it will always be sad that nobody was able to muster more than 418 assists in the first 40 years of the franchise. And Backstrom/Ovechkin are still ~130 assists off the next closest franchises' record, the ever-so-legendary Coyotes (which will be broken by Doan before Backstrom hits 553 anyway).
There are only five franchises with lower assists records: Columbus (founded 2000), Minnesota (2000), Florida (1993), Nashville (1998), and Atlanta/Winnipeg (1999).
