Well, the Caps franchise assist record is about to go down.

Michal Pivonka - 418
Alexander Ovechkin - 415
Nicklas Backstrom - 412

Obviously Backstrom will be the eventual record holder, but who breaks the record first?

Poll will be up shortly. I asked for a vBookie event but not sure we can find odds. If we get one, I'll link it.

It's absolutely amazing that two players are taking down a franchise career record in under a decade.

I find it amazing that the career assist record for a franchise that has been around since the mid 70's is only 418 but whatever...

Like they said during the broadcast last night, those two are going to hold just about every Caps record imaginable.

Instinctively you have to think Backy, but Ovi has been feeding Burt on a lot of odd man breaks recently so if he buries em it could go either way

Taking a peek around some other 70's franchises. We'll skip over some obvious ones like Edmonton (Gretzky), Carolina/Hartfod (Francis), Colorado/Quebec (Sakic), and the Islanders (Trottier).

Arizona/Winnipeg (founded 1979):
Thomas Steen - 553 assists
Calle's 418 would be - 5th place

Buffalo (founded 1970):
Gilbert Perreault - 814 assists
Calle's 418 would be - 4th place

Calgary/Atlanta (founded 1972):
Al Macinnis - 609 assists
Calle' 418 would be - 5th place

New Jersey/Colorado/Kansas City (founded 1974):
Patrick Elias - 605 (and counting)
Calle's 418 would be - 2nd place

Vancouver (founded 1970):
Henrik Sedin - 687 (and counting)
Calle's 418 would be - 3rd place

So, yeah, it's pretty sad.

I blame Bengt's broken leg. (Side note, didn't Backie pass Gus in the franchise points list last game?)

With 20 some games left, If OV doesn't win, how cool would it be for Nick to have a career year and get some of those Art Ross's Hart's and who knows what else in play offs... Right now it all feels so good, but as a Caps fan somehow I feel I need to be prepared to be disappointed...
I don't know we're that came from...
OV gets it first.

Not for long, it isn't.
