Davidson sets an advantageous precedence with this. You don't want to be in a position where you overpay and then your future RFAs are also demanding to be overpaid since you have a history of doing it.

Fair deal for both sides. Doesn't screw up any internal cap structuring, buys a couple years of UFA, gives Vlasic a good bit of long-term security but doesn't also establish a precedent that everyone with a decent season is getting 8 years. Good chance Vlasic continues to improve and the contract becomes amazing the last 3 years. Even if Vlasic doesn't improve/regresses, it's not a crippling deal by any means at term/AAV.
