The boy is their son, he was worried his mom would fall.

Apparently a judge asked about their motivation and the mom mentioned that some might say that this form of dance is an insult to (traditional) ballet, but there are people who love it. I hadn't watch that movie in ages until I saw a couple of minutes of it a couple of weeks ago. Completely forgot about the sci-fi aspects of it. Was one of my favorites movies as a kids.... early 80's born.
