Before we signed him I said I hope we do not sign him. When we signed him I thought it was too long in term and a little to much money. But after listening to some of the positive opinion on here I thought maybe it was not bad after all and he is certainty an improvement over Briere.
Hopefully he is playing poorly since he is not playing Centre and will get used to playing wing and some rest at the Olympic break and come on strong for the playoffs, if we make the playoffs.

This is exactly what I thought as well and then people changed my mind. I honestly dont know if he will ever be good on the wing. It is kind of late to ask a guy to switch when he is in his 30's and has always played center

The fact of the matter is, we have 4 players who are best as centers and only 3 spots for them. This isn't really news. I like Vinny a lot, I just don't see where he fits on this team.

ya, he's definitely worse than Rosehill and Rinaldo...

Worse isn't best word, useless would apply better.

Rosehill s job is to play 3 mins and fight and not take pens. Vinnys is to create offense, pretty simple.

The negatives far outweigh the positives while Vinny and Downie are on ice. Vinny is still hurt IMO, but Downie is just plain not good at anything right now.

Plus our best forward prospect is a center and it doesn't look like any of our centers are leaving the team any time soon unless they let Adam Hall go who doesn't factor in here.

Laughton played wing at WJHC last few games, he may play wing here. Unless Brayden or Couts are shipped out for a Dman , he may have too.

Vinny seems like the type of player, if his value increases alittle bit, where he is a trade deadline sell. That being said, this is the Flyers where we could be totally out of it and Homer/Snider still think we are buyers so doubt he is traded at the deadline.

Vinny was actually very good the beginning of the season, before he got hurt. I truly believe he is playing hurt right now. It is way to much night and day.

I'm aware he can flip to wing and likely will be some day. Pretty much any center can be flipped to at least one wing position. It's not the best utilization of the player though. Laughton is best defensively and center is not only the forward position of most importance defensively but also where face-offs take place and those factor into defense a lot.

Lecavalier, Schenn, and Couturier can all be shifted to wing really (and all of them besides Couturier have), but they're all best used as a center just like Laughton probably will.

Thus the problem.

Laughton could look really good on Coutrier's wing. Coutruier centering Laughton and Read could end up being the best defensive line in the league in a couple of years, while also contributing offensively

I wonder if Giroux would ever be considered to be moved to wing? Maybe put him on Schenn's wing along with Voracek or a top scoring winger acquired through free agency like Vanek this year or Ryan the following year if he gets to free agency. Although, I don't know if a franchise would want its highest paid/ best player switching from center to wing. But i wouldnt be against trying it out to see if it will work

It won't happen but it wouldn't be the worse thing to do with Giroux. His defense isn't bad but it's not exactly an asset neither & he does have experience on the wing even at a high level (played it at the WC's over the summer).

He struggles when going up against bigger centers (when we played Anaheim with Getzlaf this year comes to mind). It would give us size down the middle going forward with Schenn (6'1"), Couturier (6'4"), & Laughton (6'1").

It's not like the Flyers have a team chock full of those guys. And Vinny was the Flyers best forward for the first 10 or so games. Like others have speculated, I bet his injury is playing a big role in his current struggles.

And if it were up to me, he'd be on the first PP unit. I really don't understand why he's not.

When he got into that fight after the Emory scrap, they said that he had a laceration in his mouth or something... There is no doubt in my mind that he had a much worse injury than that... my guess is a broken jaw. The reason I believe that is that he wore a shield to protect his jaw for quite a while -- I think through his back injury -- How bad could a facial/mouth laceration be that would warrant such a shield? That is what is done for broken jaws... at least that was done with all the players that have broken a jaw in the past. For some reason, like maybe the one not tipping off the exact location of injuries -- upper/lower body injury -- to protect against targeting, they didn't let on. I honestly believe Vinny played hurt through that injury... He has to get some credit for that IMO.

Of course, I may be completely wrong on that assumption.

Personally, that is what I would try. But here is how I would do the lines...which might surprise.

Giroux Couts. Voracek
Hartnell Schenn Simmonds
Raffl Vinny Read

Reasoning...I want Couts to be the defensive mind on the line and allow G and Jake to go on offense. Similar to the way Bozak covers for Kessel and JVR.

Also...I want us to go top line vs top lines. This will help shelter Vinny and he SHOULD be one of the best 3rd line C out there. The second line has been too good lately to mess with.

I would go

Giroux-Schenn-Voracek
Hartnell-Vinny-Simmonds
Raffl-Couturier-Read

Giroux needs a legit scoring threat whether he is going to be at wing or center and Schenn is the best answer to that currently on the roster. Although some around here say we shouldn't make a trade for a guy like Ryan it wouldn't be a bad idea provided we can trade Lecavalier to open up some cap space and if that trade doesn't keep us from upgrading the defense.

Why in the world are we moving Giroux to wing to try to put Vinny on the 2nd and 3rd line? Also why in the world would anyone break up the Hartnell-Schenn-Simmonds line while it is hot?

Vinny is playing terrible and most likely not 100%, I would much rather stick him out on the 4th line and let Vinny be a pp specialist until he is healthy.

I was talking about sometime down the road with Giroux moving out of the center spot seeing as I mentioned Laughton in there as well. I doubt the Flyers honestly do it to begin with but if it ever were to be done it would likely be down the road & hinging on how the three young guys develop.

Vinny, like Briere, seems to need to remain a center. Problem is B. Schenn seems to as well and for his development, it makes sense to keep him there. Moving your best center to wing (even though he played RW in juniors) to accommodate a lesser center does not make sense either. Couturier is not moving from center, so I really have no idea where Vinny goes.

In this scenario we have a 1st line center with questionable offensive capability who would likely slow down the line and we also have no line to match against opponents top lines. No thanks, if G is moving to wing (highly unlikely) it needs to be Schenn taking that spot.
