VGK would either have to trade picks or exempt players (or guys "worth" exposing) back the other way

Sure he could.

Use another expansion draft to help the team again!

Take advantage of this!

Do the work you guys do!

Of course it's worth a discussion, but it's extremely premature. Obviously we should use the exemption to our advantage, but until the Seattle team has a definitive start date, it's fruitless to discuss possible moves when we have no way of knowing what our own roster will look like in 2 or 3 summers from now.

"Give us a 1st round pick or we draft soandso"
"we'll just flip him to Vegas for a pick"
"OK, give us a 2nd round pick and you get to keep soandso"
"deal"

mostly we're just hurting Seattle's bargaining power. I can see the team trading for a couple of players that aren't worth much and flipping them over the summer though. Maybe something like a low end prospect for a 4th liner or bottom pairing D, and flipping them for a 3rd or 4th.

One of the more interesting scenarios was Methot in Ottawa. McPhee probably asked for a 1st to not select him, and Dorion was probably looking to trade him after Phaneuf refused to waive his NMC. I think the teams on his NT list were the only ones who could trade for him and protect him from expansion. So he got picked, and almost all the teams calling McPhee on Methot were on his No Trade list. The league then called Dorion to tell him he was allowed to trade to get Methot back, yet he didn't beat Dallas' offer of Ferguson and a 2nd.

Then a year later his defense partner, Karlsson, has a rift with management over how things are handled and ends up getting traded. Almost to the Knights. I wonder if Dorion was still peeved?

Biggest advantage would probably be next July as teams might be hesitant to sign certain free agents.

Might keep some teams off Shmitty should he listen to other offers. Bellemare as well.

Probable Seattle start date: 2020.

So there's 2019 off season before then.

(And don't forget that next September, the NHLPA may pull the plug on the CBA, moving up expiration from 2022 to September 2020. So, there will be a lot of pressure to get new deal negotiated and not have lockout/delay of season with new expansion team.)

FWIW, Sharks specifically signed Schlemko and Boedker the year before VGK expansion draft so they'd have exposable assets. Other teams might do the same.

Expect a number of teams to possibly trade. this season or next, long term deals they can't afford to protect in expansion draft. (A few teams traded guys they otherwise would have to expose.)

A 2020 Seattle start date is a pipe dream. They don't even have approvals to begin Key Arena renovations yet & construction won't start until early December as a best case scenario. They could probably build a new arena by the start of the 2020 season, but the challenge of keeping the existing structure intact is going to be more involved & time consuming.

Two full offseasons in '19 & '20 & the 3-5 weeks leading up to the expansion draft in '21 is what is more realistic.

The NHL will be monitoring Vegas WRT "interference" in the Seattle expansion draft. There was some grumbling that VGK is exempt from expansion draft (but they don't get any $$ of expansion fee), but no official complaints.

So, it'll probably have to be a "hockey" trade, not just picks/prospects for guy that would otherwise be exposed.
