I received an email saying that my 15 y.o. son has been invited to a USHL futures camp. I know nothing about this camp, and google didn't help. Does anyone know if they send these to the masses, or do they actually invite players with potential? Thanks

I couldn't tell you but if no one answers you here I would check out http://finishyourcheck.com. Very knowledgeable and it's the busiest USHL board I've found.

I will not comment as to if is a money grab or not. The USHL has made efforts to insure that promising 15 YO's stay with their affiliated AAA midget team or local high school programs. Of course their are exemptions, but your son is a bit young to be at that level.

If good enough, he will be contacted by an individual, scouting for one of the teams, or at a later age, a college scout looking to have him mature for a season there.

There are many questions to be asked of this try out camp...location, duration, amount of prospectives, total amount of icetime available etc.

To a young talent, this invitation may seem flattering, but it is you and his local coaches that need to keep him grounded. Don't be afraid to contact and research as much as possible.

Are you talking invited to a team's camp or the USHL combine?

I am a huge USHL follower and thank you to Slowe for mentioning Finishyourcheck (as I am a moderator there). I would ask questions of the organization who invited your child. How many kids will be there, how much ice time etc. IMO some if not most teams use camps as a money grab.....(especially tryout camps)

I can only speak for Cedar Rapids's future camp as I have gone and watched it on several occasions. Mark Carlson keeps the numbers low in his camp. Usually consists of 4 teams of 15 kids or so. If I recall, they got 4-6 games and really worked on skills at other times.
