Nashville:

1st round, 4th overall: Luke Schenn (D)
Originally planned to trade down a little, but couldn't find an appropriate suitor. Schenn's a rock-solid, tough defenseman who is almost NHL ready now. This resulting embarassment of riches should allow the team to move defensemen to solidify the present rather than the future.

1st round, 20th overall: Joe Colborne (C)
Impressive size made sweeter by excellent skating. Likely suffered in the rankings a bit being from the AJHL, but with the recent successes of Jr. A players such as Kyle Turris and Brendan Smith, Nashville is willing to take a gamble on a potentially high-reward player.

2nd round, 36th overall: Evgeny Grachev (LW)
Many teams are scared off of the big power forward with the skills of a small player due to transfer agreement concerns, but Nashville couldn't resist the temptation.

2nd round, 46th overall: Jyri Niemi (D)
Nashville's fourth pick who they feel should go in the first round. Another big player, although not as good of a skater as the previous three. He's got a bomb of a shot though (radar'd hardest in the CHL), and could develop into a power-play force.

3rd round, 66th overall: Philip McRae (C)
A bit of a gamble here. Nashville likes his two-way play and flashes of brilliance. He'll need to get stronger, but he has a good pedigree here (he's the son of former NHLer/tough guy Basil McRae). With the volume of picks Nashville has, they feel they can afford to take some risks.

3rd round, 78th overall: Kevin Poulin (G)
Before the season began, he was talked about as the best goalie prospect in the draft, and a probable first rounder. Some of that hype has worn off a bit after an inconsistent and often poor season, but Nashville recognizes that the talent is still there.

4th round, 96th overall: Jack Downing (LW)
Another player who probably should have been drafted last year. Downing plays a power-forward game and has the size to pull it off. He's got good hands too and hopefully will develop into a stud in and around the crease.

4th round, 113th overall: Zack Fenwick (D)
Nashville rolls the dice a bit here on the advice of their only amateur scout, a Kingston Frontenacs fan. He's got good size and work ethic.

5th round, 137th overall: Eddie Lack (G)
Nashville gets a steal here. Lack's an overager, but much like Gistedt last year, he may be one of the first goalies taken. He's posted excellent stats in the 2nd Swedish league, outplaying teammate Ed Belfour.

7th round, 197th overall: Tomas Voracek (D)
Nashville also feels they may have stolen one here. Similar to 2nd rounder Jyri Niemi: a big defenseman with a powerful shot. Nashville hopes he may have some of his brother's skill inside him as well.

Nashville makes a very safe pick in Luke Schenn and then takes a number of gambles, primarily on big players with decent skating abilities. It's a bit of a "boom-or-bust" draft, but Nashville feels confident that at least a few will turn out to be serious "booms".

2008 DRAFT PICKS

1st Round, 7th Overall : Nikita Filatov - Immensely talented, we absolutely love what he could bring to this team - a dynamic offensive player with a ton of potential and flair, a potential franchise forward.

1st Round, 21st Overall : Yann Sauve -
A potential top pairing defenceman, very mobile, does everything well - has fallen off later on this season, but we have every faith he's going to develop into a very solid all-around defenceman.

1st Round, 24th Overall : Jimmy Hayes - A gritty winger, lots of offensive potential, we like what he can bring to this club and we see him as a potential top 6 forward with some very sharp offensive talent.

2nd Round, 34th Overall : Jared Staal -
Amazing bloodlines, not considered as talented as his brothers but we see him as a top 6 forward, and a strong character player with real leadership potential.

2nd Round, 35th Overall : Tyler Beskorowany -
We consider to be the hidden gem of the draft - played on a very poor Owen Sound squad, but kept the team competitive in games that could have easily been blowouts. Great size, and good lateral movement.

2nd Round, 51st Overall : Viktor Tikhonov - Another product of solid bloodlines, we see him as a highly talented potential top 6 forward. A steal this late in the draft, we had him going in the first round.

2nd Round, 52nd Overall : Kristoffer Berglund - Our scouts consider him the best Swedish defenceman in the draft, and possibly the best European defenceman in the draft as well. We see him as a real offensive threat down the road.

3rd Round, 65th Overall : Justin Azevedo -
While he lacks size and true skating ability, you cannot deny the talent level and hockey sense as the leader in the OHL in points. We see him as a real boom or bust prospect, but couldn't give up on him at this spot.

4th Round, 92nd Overall: Jordan Southorn - Another boom or bust, he has struggled with consistency but we see him as a possible top 4 defenceman.

4th Round, 110th Overall : Michael Pelech -
A gritty player, doesn't mind getting his hands dirty, we see him as a safe pick to be a grinder down the road and could excel as a 3rd line winger. Not a lot of offensive potential, but we like the work ethic.

5th Round, 121st Overall : Dale Hunt -
Great size, needs to work on his skating, but we really like the kind of game that he plays - could really develop, but definately a project.

5th round, 127th Overall : Andrew Macwilliam -
We were very surprised to see him still available this late in the draft, but we see him as a potential top six shutdown defenceman. Great size, though little offensive upside.

5th Round, 130th Overall : Dominic Pacovsky -
A dynamic winger who we see as really being a possible top 6 forward - a real gem we had hoped would still be
available this late.

7th Round, 182nd Overall : Keven Guerette Charland - 2nd year of eligibility, was once highly touted but has fallen off - plays a bit of a grit game, but we see enough in him to think that if he can overcome his health issues, he could still be a player in the league.

to PHI: James Neal, Dal 4th '08
for
to DAL: Derian Hatcher

to cal: 3rd rd pick
for
to phi: matt keatley and a 5th rd pick

draft picks

1- John Carlson, D, Indiana (USHL) 6"2 212lbs shoots right
scouting report-Carlson projects to be a solid offensive defenseman in the NHL. Not only is he very good in his own zone, the rearguard is also a great playmaker, who also possesses a rocket of a shot. He doesn't panic, plays and reads very well and most of all, he's big, strong and can skate.going to Umass next year

4-Jake Youso, C, International Falls (US HS)6"0 185lbs shoots left
great skater who was a mr hockey finalist, plays in all situations, great shot and hockey sense. going to Umin next year. i think he'll round into a 2/3 line guy at worst with 30 goal upside

4-Marc-Andre Bourdon, D, Rouyn-Noranda (QMJHL)6"0 206lbs sh. left
good size and great hockey sense, reads the play well and make good disisions, was +39 this year in the Q with 59 pts and 114 pim, i think he's the most under rayed player in the draft.

5-Justin Florek, LW, US NTDP (US U-18)6"4 195lbs shoots left
future power forward, has all the tools to be an all star one day, size speed and skill. still a little raw but i've seen quit a few list with him in the top 50 and alot of reports he's better then hayes who went 1st rd. he'll get a lots of ice time at Northern Michigan next year

5-Chris Darnell, LW, Culver (US HS)6"2 180lbs shoots left
plays a solid 2 way game and has the skating, athletic talent and work ethic to be a solid 3/4 line guy, good size. 4 years of college hockey and a few in the A are needed imo because this is his 1st year playing at a high level. i think he can be an nhl player if he wants it enough

6-Jan Kovar, C, Plzen (Cze.)5"10 172lbs shoots right
boom or bust pick, yah he's a tad small but he's got tons of skill and speed so we're crossing our fingers he develops into a ziggy palffy one day

7- Michael Lomas, C/LW, Brampton (OHL)5"11 183lbs shoots left
couldn't believe he was left, does all the little things great, can skate, hit, fight a bit, good hockey sense, will block shots, can play the pk and pp.

overall i think i did a good job of filling the flyers #1 need of a young goalie(keatley via trade) and rebuilding the D with carlson and bourdon, as well as adding size, grit, speed and skill up front

2. CAR Circular Theory selects: Drew Doughty, D, Guelph (OHL)

Drew Doughty is the most complete package from a group of outstanding blueliners. Doughty is brilliant when leading the rush and compliments his offensive upside by being solid in his own end of the rink as well. A little heavy for his age at 213

41. CAR CircularTheory selects: Greg Nemisz, RW, Windsor (OHL)

His your typical big guy. Not the best skater but has a great set of hands, despite the lack of top flight speed Nemisz still manages to produce. Stock will most likely rise throughout the rest of the season

102. CAR CircularTheory: Lance Bouma, C, Vancouver (WHL)

Centerman, fine size, solid, 2-way player, though his offensive abilities are questionable to say the least.

156. CAR CircularTheory: Mike Cichy, C, Tri-City (USHL)

Is a smart player with a natural goal scorer’s touch.

194. CAR CircularTheory: Tyler Shattock, RW, Kamloops (WHL)

...

I keep dropping in to see how this draft is going. I've got to say I'm impressed. I was a little surprised to see that Vitaly Karamnov (Everett - WHL) wasn't drafted. He attended the Edmonton Rookie Camp but (as I understand it), he wasn't allowed to sign as he never went through the draft. They remained high on him through the season from what we were hearing from scouts visiting Everett.

Nice Job. I wish I had the knowledge to take part in one of these.
