I agree, although I'm pretty confident that Smith will have a better season with the improved team (and especially defense) he now has with the Flames. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be anything better. Then again, I'm pretty sure that Mason won't sign for anything less than 3x3, and the numbers will probably be even higher than that.

This will likely be a 1A and 1B situation, and it's fine for Winnipeg. They needed a veteran goalie to show Hellebuyck the ropes. The organization hasn't given up on him as the starter of the future, they just needed him to be that quicker than he was ready to be. This buys him some time to learn some habits from a really solid professional and takes the pressure off his shoulders a bit. I like it for many reasons, both on ice and off. Good move.
