Patrick raised the question over whether the still-theoretical team would be an expansion franchise or a relocated one. He mentioned the Arizona Coyotes, which is par for the course, but the team's new ownership group has said, constantly, that they're committed to the market long-term, five-year out clause notwithstanding. Several recent long-term sponsorship deals back that up.

The other team Patrick mentioned, per his source: the Carolina Hurricanes. Owner Peter Karmanos is looking to sell for an "exorbitant amount,' according to Patrick, so he said the end result could be a Vegas move. The Hurricanes have missed the playoffs the last five years, play in a non-traditional market and have uncertainty at the top of the organization, so there are dots to connect.

Patrick also told a story about a run-in with Karmanos at a charity golf tournament in Connecticut in 1997 after Karmanos moved the Hartford Whalers to Connecticut. Patrick, who worked for ESPN at the time, was at a meet-and-great with a few ex-Whalers, including goalie Sean Burke. And, naturally, the discussion turned to the move.

As far away as this is, this has been my fear since that PK interview at the end of the season. He doesn't seem like he wants to own anymore, and with all this talk of expansion, combined with our sub-par attendance, it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I'm not too overly freaked out, because I'm a fan of this franchise not necessarily their location since I moved to Atlanta, but it would really suck to see it. That being said, a couple of good season to boost attendance and this probably goes away. Either that, or one of us starts buying lottery tickets and buys the team off of PK haha.

They're embedded in the community and the attendance is OK despite the lack of playoff showings. They're not going anywhere.

The NHL wants expansion team revenues, not the relocation of franchises.

The NHL isn't moving a team to Vegas. They are going to get some ******* to give them $1billion for the probe ledge of putting an expansion team there.

I don't think Vegas will be on the table as far as a destination goes. But being linked with a possible move at a time when several cities are building stadiums in anticipation of a new NHL team is at least a little unsettling, to me anyway.

Perhaps you should quote the remainder of the article, there, smooth:

Anyway, the biggest argument against a Hurricanes-Vegas move: An expansion team would generate hundreds of millions in fees that'd go in the other owners' pockets. A relocation would not — and the league, Vegas plans aside, won't allow a team to move if there are interested, viable ownership groups in its current market. (If you want to look way, way down the road, though, moving an Eastern Conference team to Vegas would balance the conferences at 15, which would make it easier to add teams in, say, Seattle and Quebec City.)

This isn't much more than late-August content fodder, though. The NHL is interested in expanding at some point, and the league is geographically wonky. Both of those will be addressed at some point. The specifics will sort themselves out.

C'mon, man.

This. I'm not overly concerned about the team moving to Vegas.... BUT... lots of cities want a team and are equipped to get one. Reading between the lines as far as what PK says and his recent attitude toward the franchise.... and now there's some smoke. Definitely not good.

What's the point in hiring Waddell to expand the Hurricanes' influence if they're going to move the team a year later? That is unless he's the closer and they lied to our faces.

There are buyers in this area with pockets deep enough to keep the team here if push comes to shove.

And this is the crux of the matter. The NHL won't be relocating a team baring another Atlanta situation (and for all this teams faults we're pretty ****ing far from that), and as long as expansion dollars are on the table it definitely won't be happening.

There are buyers in this area with pockets deep enough to keep the team here if push comes to shove.

This is the biggest factor. Worst case, it's still not a situation where the arena owner is going to actively try to **** over whoever the new owners would be unlike A$G would have done to Anson Carter's group there. The Canes won't be going anywhere as long as deep pocketed locals (and some of them already have decent chunks of the team in Capitol Broadcasting and Epic) have any kind of interest in keeping them around.

If you listen to the actual interview, this isn't inside info coming from a source.

What Patrick says he's heard is that a team could theoretically move to Vegas. He goes on to say that one possible candidate is the Canes because of Karmanos' high asking price for the team.

Note: Dan Patrick thinks the Canes could be a candidate based on other information his source gave him.

Non-issue IMO. There are way too many factors working against it, first and foremost being the fact that Karmanos is locked into a contract with the public as a condition of building the arena. This isn't like Atlanta where ASG owned the arena and there was nothing anyone could do. If PK tried to break that lease, Bettman would take him to the woodshed just like he did with Jerry Moyes in Phoenix.

Moving a non traditional market team to another non traditional market of similar size makes no sense.

Note: my opinion has nothing to do with Dan Patrick, Dan Patrick knows less about hockey than I do (read: very, very little about hockey). I've been nervous about this for awhile now. PK is going to sell soon, seems like anyway, and any time a team is sold that possibility exists. Any time a team is sold when other cities are rumored to be looking for a team? Well that boosts that possibility even more.

I don't think there's a high percentage that we're going to move. But I do think it's a non-negligible percentage.

I dunno...the 'Canes have a cupcake lease because they participated in a 3-way with the government of North Carolina and NC State whereby NC got two happy sports teams, NC State got first dibs on dates and a shiny new arena, and the 'Canes got everything else.

Plus, the Thrashers were literally forced out of Atlanta by ASG. They owned the arena, and the only way they were staying put was if someone bought a Thrashers and covered all of their costs (LOL).

Finally, correct me if I am wrong, but Karmanos actually likes hockey. And I don't know if he wants to be remembered in the NHL as the guy that ripped the same franchise from two separate markets.

Karmanos literally just gave an interview within the last two months in which he called out the fans for not buying enough season tickets and not being patient enough with the team.

Again, nothing is imminent, but this isn't the best situation we could be in.

Yeah, I was going to say the same. I'd be willing to bet that at this point in his life, PK couldn't care less how people remember him or what they think of him.

I forget where it was, and I would sooner have my comment struck from the record than actually spend any time to find it, but maybe someone else knows what interview I'm referring to. We talked about it at length on these boards.

You're going to die one day.

Nothing is imminent, but it's not the best situation you could be in.

But maybe you could stop talking about it and enjoy yourself. It's such a nice day! Try not to think too much about your death sentence.
