Motte brought a lot of consistency to our 4th line and PK. Guys like him are absolutely needed on teams that want to compete for a Cup…as evident by our deep run this year. Not saying he was a primary reason why we went so far, but having him in the lineup over the carousel of AHL tweeners we ran out this year made a big difference. And, simply for that reason, I would love to have him back at a reasonable deal. Thinking a Goodrow-lite contract. Maybe 4 years @ $2M per.

I think Motte wants 3.5. He rejected 2.5 from the Nucks. Maybe he would take less on a better team but who knows anymore.

No shot he’s getting 3.5 lol . He’s a 4th line winger that doesn’t put up points or fights
He will get a Jesper Fast type of contract if that in my opinon. all he brings is speed and hits. Still more useful than Gauthier. Gauthier brings speed drive the net lose the puck and that’s it.

I see, so you want another like a LW/C or RW/C like Goodrow who has multiple uses. I don't imagine many players like that are available. Who are you thinking of. btw, what do you mean by specialist? What is Motte's specialty?
His main value is as a pk specialist in my opinion. Im not bashing the guy. If we keep him that is fine. I like his speed. Just wish he brought size or faceoff ability with it since his goal scoring will be nominal.

Motte changes the configuration of the bottom 6 when healthy. He’s primarily a 4th liner who is on the first PK unit but he creates turnovers and pressures the puck really well. He can bump up to the 3rd line when needed and his offense isn’t as bad as many here are describing. He paced for about 25 points over the last couple of years over 82 games which is at Weber between 3rd and 4th liner. Similar to Fast prior to playing way up in the lineup. Anything under $2m seems reasonable to me.

There is also value in adding another PK specialist to go along with Goodrow. I’d rather have those two in the lanes and/or blocking point blasts more often than Mika or Kreider.

That’s one of the reasons why we saw so much Rooney when he was massive suckage this past season

Lol no way. Anything more than 2 mill per year and he could say goodbye. Hes a 4th liner whos good on the pk and doesnt fight. You dont overpay for those types

Personally, I add a lot more weight to defensive, lower line forwards than most fans. I can assure you that.

Mainly because I the understand the value it adds to a teams’ chances of winning, especially in a playoff setting when it matters most. This comes from personal experience.

There is a mentality players like Motte bring to the game that while not flashy or even noticed by some are just as important as scoring a goal or setting up a play for a game winner in overtime.

For this Rangers team specifically, they are set up on defense for the most part. Where they need to improve is in the team defense department and a lot of that has to do with the forwards. You have an all world-Vezina winning goaltender at the start of his NHL career, you build around him and strengthen shot suppression, 5 on 5 possession and Pk.

I’d love to have Motte resign on a longterm deal if the hit works. He helps solidify a bottom 6 that at times this past year featured a guy like Gauthier for long stretches who was thrusted into a role he didn’t belong in. It’s the type of add that gets you one step closer to winning a championship

The more I think about this the more I would only do a 1 year deal.
He is a guy that may play 50 games a season. He may get 15-20 points a year.
He had 2 goals and 0 assists in 24 games for us.
Why are people acting like he is a poor mans Bob Gainey or Guy Carbonneau?

you got anyone in mind? Colton Sissons is a player that ranks high in faceoffs, hits, and PK but I don't think he's available. He's on a decent long term contract. $2.85M AAV a bit high for a fourth liner but he gets 3rd liner points (25-30) and 2nd line ice time in NSH (16:09). Not super productive but he's definitely a great plug player with the versatility you are looking for. Cizikas also comes to mind but no chance on him either. Players who can do all of those things and under a reasonable AAV are really rare.

I'm not familiar enough with his game to say. I know I have liked the Isles, Pit (Crosby double shifts), and TB 4th lines. I'd like to build the team top down so my concern is the top 6 first and then the 4th line. I see some mentioning Motte as a 3rd line guy and I shake my head. Guy hustles but if he is on our 3rd line we are in trouble. TB had Perry at 1 mill cap (unusual). They had Maroon at 900k. They had Paul at 1.3. I'd like to see some real difference makers on the cheap like they had then spend 2.5 mill on Motte. If not I would not mind leaving a spot open for a prospect. Its healthy for our prospects to know we dont have a bunch of big contracts waiting ahead of them.

It would be so NYR to trade for Blais, Motte and Copp...

then not be able to re-sign any of them and wasting all those assets, including a 1st and Buch :biglaugh:

30th overall and Morgan Barron for Andrew a Copp is certainly blowing the cupboard to bits🤣. Yea, the Buch trade looks worse because Blais blew his knee out, but can the fanbase get over that already? They’re the same fans that tell the DeAngelo lovers to move on. Time for Kakko, Kravtsov and Laf to eat up top-6 mins. Motte was acquired for a fourth. Is that pick a wasted asset too?
