The same Canes team that thought Kotkaniemi was on the verge of breaking out? Yeah, I’ll let Kent decide this one.
That always smelled like a Dundon revenge play first & foremost - Habs offer sheet bruised his ego publicly

Waddell would. But would Dundon allow him to trade with the Habs.
What makes Dundon look worse buying out KKs contract or making a face saving trade?

Apparently, Necas wants to play center and wants a Svechnikov-like contract which is why the Canes want to move on. Not to mention that the owner probably still has a grudge against us because he acts like a moody 16 year old so it would cost a lot.

All depending the ask but for 3 years and less yes !
Pesce has really fallen off this year. I also doubt he would sign with a Canadian team. Maybe we could give him a 1 year deal at a very high cap hit, but I don't think we are a playoff team anyways so it would strictly be to flip him at the deadline.

Matheson for Necas 1for1 who says no?
It'd likely be a better idea to trade Matheson for a prized asset or two that Carolina wants instead of a direct trade. Sorta like how we traded for Dach

Many are saying Matheson's value is now at its highest. I don't see Hughes wanting to trade Matheson anytime soon, but if he did, his value might be highest next year, or the year after. If Matheson can again put up numbers like he has ever since he's been in Montreal and healthy, that will show his first year and a half weren't a fluke. More importantly for his trade value, if he continues to be paired with Guhle, his defensive metrics may greatly improve.
Why is this whole post bolded — did @Habs Halifax hack your account? :sarcasm:

If Necas is so good then why do the Canes want to let him go?
Speculation: Necas is accumulating stats on a stacked team. His agent will use said stats to justify a salary increase, which may make his new contract harder to manage as the team's performances go down with other vets leaving. Canes see his RFA status and wonder if they shouldn't just trade him before that happens.

IOW: he's not that good and they're playing a short instead of a long investment.

Alexandre Carrier is a free agent this year. He's an under-rated RD. I think he'd be a good partner for Xhekaj.

Both Carriers: William (Vegas) and Alexandre (Nashville) would be solid pickups.

Pesce will be expensive, and a lot of teams will show interest, including both Vancouver and Toronto.

Matt Roy (LAK) is another quality RHD going to market. He'd be a good partner for Matheson. But like Pesce, I think there will be a big market for him.
Good post.
Both Carriers would make us an upper bubble competitor IMO. These are the types of moves we should be able to make with ease.
They are also exactly the type of moves I expect before we go after a top end forward.
They will allow us to compete while still permitting us the time necessary to assess our youth.
We aren't at the point where we can afford to move the wrong player at least from where I sit.
Most of the trade proposals have us giving up little but that just isn't reality.
If and when we decide to move on a high end player it will cost us.

Pionk is a target that makes a lot of sense... And WPG may be ready to move him to keep Demelo and re-allocate some cap spending.

Strubble, Avs 2nd, Minny 3rd... I think that should be in the ball park +/-.

Would be nice to pry M.Barron as well, add some beef to the 4th line/13th fwd spot.

Slaf Suzuki CC
Roy Dach Newhook
Armia Dvorak Gally
Barron Evans Anderson
RHP

Matheson Pionk
Guhle Savard
Xhekaj Barron
Harris

Let's us move Guhle back to LD and reduce Matheson minutes by having Guhle/Savard carry heavier ES load.

Hutson, Mailloux & RB can start the year in Laval, and get NHL time as injuries arise.

Be nice to add a legit/established top 6 fwd as well, but that would likely require finding a home for Anderson

Pionk is a f***ing characterless rat I don’t want anywhere near this team. Oh yeah, and he’s not really that good too.

Did I miss something? Legit curious why so much hatred...

Of what I've seen from him he's smart & competes hard, plays physical despite a smallish stature. That quality would be a welcome locker room vet addition to a team with several undersized players I would think.

Very solid 2-3dman from a skill/minutes & versatility pov.

Also seems well liked & respected by his teammates & coaches.

What's the evidence of his lack of character :dunno:

Well pal, I honestly probably am too immaturely biased against the Jets since 2021. So take me with a grain of salt.

However, I see a player who constantly cheap shots and skates away from conflict. He loves late hits. A real liberty taker that wouldn’t survive with no instigator penalty, but I guess that’s most modern players. He always stands out as one of the rattler players in the league to me. I always joke they got mini Trouba for Trouba to my friends.

He kind of embodies everything unlikeable about the Jets’ team character to me.

He was horrible in the playoffs. Jets fans want to chuck him into Lake Winnipeg and let him swim home.

Huge pass.

Habs fans wanted to chuck Slaf overboard in November...

I watched 3 of the Jets playoff games. He was solid for a 2-3 dman.

His usage went up 1min/game, and for his career (22 playoff games), he's averaging 24min+. Considerably more than his regular season average.

Fans may be quick to complain, but that suggests his coaches (Maurice & Bowness) were inclined to lean on him heavier in the playoffs...

He'd easily & clearly be a top 4 upgrade for us this year. As a UFA to be, either we leverage his play for 2/3 of the year than trade him for assets before the deadline or if he's a great fit, try to get a 2-3year extension and move Savard instead.

Point is not to add him as a long term fixture, but as a short term boost to our push to make the playoffs and hold the RD seat until 2 of RB/Mailloux/Barron are ready for full time top 4 usage

Buyout or trade with retention. I don't think anyone will take that full cap hit.

Kotkaniemi, another example of the dangers of drafting for need - and bad judgement on the part of Timmins and Bergevin. Tkachuk's size was also clearly a need. And they loved Tkachuk. But they were focused on drafting for the greater need of a big center, at the expense of the talent separation.
Drafting is based on the projection of the skills of players. It isn't an exact science. Out of few fans , Tkachuck was the worst selection Habs could make. He didn't put good offensive stats that season, and a lot of us were seing him as a 3rd line physical player. Bergevin once said that he really likes him but let Timmins choose.

You're are saying that Habs did draft KK because of their need - a bad judgement- but then, you're saying that Tkatchuk's size was also a need.??? . . KK was a riser, and i think that he was more skilled, the other more of a hard worker and in your face player. He was also put on the first line with big minutes, free to make errors to learn the tempo.

About KK, he never was a big worker, never was the one to listen to his coaches directives, and soon started to appreciate nightlife too much. To resume, he was a better player, but didn't develop his game. It's so easy to always blame scouting director and GM, but they aren't the ones that puts the skates and that works to be better

He’s a good player but he’s going to get massively overpaid in the summer, would rather not be that team.

It would really depend on the price point for me.
