As more often than not, you are not mistaken.
The other side is that Gards ahould/could have read that and not pinched, but within the system his initial thought was right.

Yeah, it's on him to not read that the support wasn't there. To be honest, felt like he reacted slow on that whole sequence.

He mentioned in the pre-season that he wants to avoid a slow start this year. Perhaps that means that he'll start playing as he can by game 20 instead of 40.

Man I thought some of our fans were hard on the team but the Jets board is giving us a run for our money. Lots of posters slamming Laine as well lol, love it.

I wasn't very pleased with the last 6 or 7 minutes of that period, but thought we dominated the first half.

We Finally got a PP goal, and we got 2. Time to bring this lead home.

Unmentioned detail of that goal against. The pinch would have been alright if our third man high, in this case Bozak (if I'm not mistaken), would take depth as he should. Our system utilizes aggressive D-men, so it's important to get support there.

Bozak has a tendency to be lazy with covering for our D-men. One of the holes in his defensive game.

It's still on Gardiner to read the situation before pinching though.

Finally, the problem with how people read defense is that they do it the same way as offense, based on the big and noticeable plays. That works for offense that is about creating that one moment. With defense, one great or weak play doesn't matter as much as the 100 plays that often goes unnoticed, except when the play is so bad that it by itself creates a goal against. That's borderline in this case, as it still needed two more bad plays for the big GA to happen.

JVR fell just behind Gardiner. He likely would have made been there to help Carrick.

That goal was a direct relation to what hampers both JVR & Bozak in the compete department only this time around Marner wasn't there to bail them out but you have to have hockey IQ that all sorts don't have to comprehend this.

1st JVR was soft and didn't make the play falling down on that play that left Gardiner caught, He didn't pinch he held the line like he should have trusting the system. 2nd your bang on right about Bozak did his typical float job who as the center should be the one rotating high for the D men holding the line. Marner was late to cover up for Bozak this time and you get what you get. This sequence in that situation SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC AS THE STRUCTURE OF PLAY Babcock has for this team. Defense get's played in the offensive zone now by means of puck possession and a big part of that is D men holding the line.

Gardiner looks like the goat when the breakdown was somewhere else.

Marincin's pretty slow and passive too. Polak is physical and active at least, the guy isn't as bad as people say imo.

It's a moot point, neither player makes the lineup if the team is ever truly good and will get replaced along with Hunwick in the future.
Marincin skates waaaaaayyyy better than polak in regards to edge work. Polak in a straight line and his pivots are good but his crossovers forward and more some backwards are horrible.

That's too bad. No need to slam Laine either. Kids need to grow.
