Also, if the Sens weren't willing to take on Marleau (who can still play if he must) for a 1st why would they take on Clarkson (who can't play) for a low 2nd, when the cap hit is only slightly less? They can probably squeeze more out of Vegas than that.

Because Clarkson's on LTIR and his contract is insured, and Marleau is a buy out where real salary has to be paid. Sens don't care about cap hits, they care about dollars paid. That makes Clarkson's contract a lot better than buying out Marleau.

Interesting how people keep forgetting the Leafs cannot take on any salary if they plan on resigning Marner?? As much as they need defensemen they simply don't have the cap space and this deal adds $3.2 million or so to their cap.

Clarkson's contract is insured as he'll be on LTIR. Melnyk doesn't have to pay him anything and it helps the Sens get to the floor. TOR realistically doesn't need to be a part of a trade like this. One of Haula, Eakin or Reaves with Clarkson and a 2nd in 2020 for CLB's 3rd

Toronto can just take Clarkson ourselves. Ltir doesn't count towards the cap

Yes it does, and no they can't. They only have 13.5M in projected space and that's without deals for Marner, Kappy and Johnsson (they haven't been official yet).

The off-season ceiling is only 110%. With those players deals and Clarkson, the Leafs would easily be over before they could sign everyone.

No from the Leafs. We should not be giving that much up for Miller. Go after someone better.

If OTT wants him, take the Leafs out of it. Make it Miller + Clarkson for a mid round pick and be done with it.

Other option is VGK keep Clarkson and deal with it if they are too hungry

Decent attempt but how do the Leafs fit this in the cap? Who is gone from Marner, Kapenen, Johnson, Nylander, or Kadri? Cause one of them would need to go and this does not include Brown, Marleau, and Gardiner. Leafs won't run with a 19 or 20 man roster people.

Sens are cheap. Do you think they pay Clarkson and not place him on LTIR? Not sure if you noticed but if they place him on LTIR, they don't get to use the cap hit to reach the floor. Pretty sure the Sens would be after a contract that actually plays hockey for them.
They don’t see cap savings on a LTIR player until they go over the cap. It counts against the cap until they go over.

a better one would be

OTT get Clarkson and TOR 1st and vegas 2nd
VGS gets TOR 2nd
TOR gets Miller

If you took out the Toronto first I think it’s a fair deal for all sides. Ottawa can send back a guy like Harpur to Vegas.

Did you miss the part where a couple of nobodies and two seconds got PK Subban?

Did you miss the part where NAS wanted to trade him at a discoutn in order to free up some cap space?

VGY can trade other pieces in order to fit under the cap (Like Clarkson w/ a 2nd pick for example), trading a top4 Dman for nothing isn't going to fly

Oh, and Subban is also being paid 3 times Colin Miller's salary

Okay. Did you miss the trade where Carolina sent a top4 defenseman with term, who only makes 700k more than Miller to the Blackhawks for a backup goalie and a borderline NHL'er, to free up cap space? Trading a top4 dman for nothing in order to clear up cap space is all the rage.
